I can just see the headline now from the idiot media:

“BREAKING NEWS! EVERYONE CURRENTLY ALIVE WILL BE DEAD WITHIN 150 YEARS!”

Half the population. By one point 1/4 is reduced, and then out of the remaining, another 1/3. Taken together it’s half the entire population.

Not to worry - it won’t happen until December 21, 2012. ;-)

Depending on which calender correction you use and how you feel about the end times, December 21, 2012 might start as early as July 4th, 2009. At the very least, I’m hoping for a little rain to go with the fireworks.

Toba, the last one, left only 2-10,000 people alive on the whole earth....75k years ago.

My personal opinion is that this idea is not very credible. There is little actual evidence to back it up. I don't find the genetic "evidence", by itself, at all convincing.

Every week there's another article on how we're all going to die. Last week was that the Earth was going to be hit by Venus, as Mercury's orbit gets erratic. The week before that was that the Earth was losing its atmosphere faster than Venus and Mars.

This week, it's a super volcano. Next week, maybe the super tsunami will be back. Who knows about the week after that.

Any chance the next super volcano could erupt without warning in DC?

The earth opening up and swallowing DC - I'd miss the Smithsonian.

So much to worry about and so little time.

I love the list. You can almost add a new disaster every day. A lot of this is driven by researchers pimping for funds since they have not figured out a productive way to fund their living.

There was a show on Discovery or some such channel last night about reversal of the earth’s magnetic field and loss of protection from cosmic rays or some such thing. Not a thing can be done about it but I’m sure it has scared a bunch of people and children to death. Good job.

If that baby erupts then global warming will be the least of our problems. When Krakatoa erupted in 1856 global temperatures plunged more than a degree for a whole year. Al Gore better get a bigger heating plant for his mansion.

FWIW:

NPR story from November 22, 2006:

All Things Considered
The Strange Drumbeat of Mount St. Helens
Scientists are studying a drumming sound produced by the Mount St. Helens volcano in Washington state. For the past two years, a gigantic plug of rock has been pushed up relentlessly by magma from below, creating mini-earthquakes.

You are a man after my own heart. I've also been anxiously looking forward to a meteor strike on that very spot.

"You can almost add a new disaster every day"

I try to follow some loose rules/guidelines when adding to the list. Among them is that the new panic must be posted on FR and that the new panic pops up during my normal scanning of thread headlines.

If this ever happens there won’t be any people from those areas to worry about! The estimates of what hppens after a super volcano erupts is no survivors for about 500 mi radius around and few for the 800mi radius

Sufficient room for doubt, agreed. Especially, when I realized that the 'Hobbits' nearby on Flores survived that catastrophe.

I am going to show my ignorance here (as I have many times before). Isn't there some way we could harness the heat that is in this volcano? Use it as some kind of energy source?

That assumes, of course, that people in the PAC NW are too stupid to relocate when the volcanoes begin to rumble and shake.

December 21, 2012 is a lot of hooey.

The Aztecs simply found out that the round calendar of theirs wasn’t selling big anymore and so they stopped the chiseling cold.

Now November 6, 2012, that’s the big worry.
