Scientists Say 'Super Volcano' May Be Brewing Beneath Mount St. Helens
FoxNews ^ | Sunday, June 14, 2009

A team of scientists say they have evidence that a "super volcano" may be brewing underneath Mount St. Helens, NewScientist.com reports.

Researchers say indicators suggest Mount St. Helens and other northwest volcanoes are plugged into a huge subterranean pool of magma that could one day burst to the surface in a "super" eruption.

If what they believe is true, the structure beneath the mountain would be comparable in size to the biggest magma chambers ever discovered, such as the one below Yellowstone National Park.

If we have a super volcano, kiss your butt goodbye. Toba, the last one, left only 2-10,000 people alive on the whole earth....75k years ago.

Wasn’t a volcanic eruption what caused the mini-iceage about 500 years ago? Its ashes, etc. blocked out the rays of the sun for such a period of time that thousands perished becasue food growth could not be sustained? I hate to run counter to global warming crowd but even this potential volcanic explosion aside, the evidence seems, repeat seems, to be leaning toward a cooling, rather than a warming period?

Sometimes I think something like that is the only way to restore some sense to this sorry planet.

“Wasn’t a volcanic eruption what caused the mini-iceage about 500 years ago?”

Based upon this factoid; seems to me we should all be driving big ole suv’s, full size pickups and such. In fact, wouldn’t it make good sense if there were a law against driving anything with an engine less than 427CI (7L)? Seems like we should be doing whatever to cause global warming instead of the reverse :)

St. Helens and the other many active and dormant volcanoes are all part of the Pacific Ring of fire, and the entire area in the Pacific Northwest is very geologically active. We also have the Cascadia fault in close proximity, and it’s an open question out here about which one will set off the other...

The real threat to the area is Mt. Ranier, because if it ever does a St. Helens, the eruption and pyroclastic flows would flush the Puget Sound like a giant toilet, and scour out everything between the volcano and the sea.

If I remember correctly, it was Mt. Tambora that erupted back then, leading to the ‘Year without a Summer’ and directly to the writing of Frankenstein. Watched a Learning Channel episode about it, and it talked about how Mary Shelley and her husband vacationed with Lord Byron on Lake Geneva. However, because the weather was so cold that summer, they couldn’t go hiking, etc., so they stayed indoors, and decided to each write a short story. And out of Mary Shelley came Frankenstein! Who’da thunk?
