North Carolina Program Pays Girls a Dollar a Day Not to Get Pregnant
Fox News ^ | 06/25/2009 | Joshua Rhett Miller

A dollar a day keeps the babies away.

That's the incentive behind College Bound Sisters, a program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro that aims to keep 12- to 18-year-old girls in school and baby-free.

Girls in the program attend 90-minute meetings every week at which they receive lessons in abstinence and the use of contraceptives — and they receive $7 every week they do not get pregnant. The money is deposited into a fund that's collectible when they enroll in college.

But not everyone thinks paying kids to stay childless is the right way to lower the teen pregnancy rate. They say the program sends mixed messages, specifically to parents, that incentivizing good behavior is the way to go.

"It makes me a bit uneasy," said Bill Albert, chief program officer at the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. "I do have mixed feelings. It's hard to pay people to do something that we think they should be doing regardless. It would be like if you didn't want young people to experiment with marijuana, you'd pay them not to do it."

Isn't this a form of prostitution? Performing a sex act for money is how prostitution is defined. Not having sex is a sex act, isn't it? </sarc>

So we’re pay for expected behavior?

Can I get a dollar a day for being a tax paying law abiding citizen?

You need to re-read. They are not trying to prevent them from having sex, only being pregnant. (Guess you can have sex, get pregnant, have an abortion and still get your 7 bucks.)

Hmmm...wonder if this is why they need to raise taxes for education.

Since we always hear about inequality of pay...maybe the boys get $1.50 a day?

We need to have a little talk. Boys aren't cable of getting pregnant. More on that later.

When will I get paid for being an honest, law-abiding citizen?

I don’t expect to be paid for that, nor SHOULD I.

This is a slippery slope folks and a very bad precedent.

Shouldn’t boys get paid for not getting girls pregant then?

After all, without the boys, it would not be possible.

Ha. I was wondering who the wiseacre was going to be to hit me with “boys can’t get pregnant”. Of course, I was referring to the fact that boys should get paid for not getting the girls pregnant. We demand equality! Stand up for the boys!

Cheers!

Indeed. They get paid a LOT MORE than $1 a day by the goobermint if they DO get pregnant.

If you want more of something, subsidize it.

And libs are surprised that unwed motherhood became the norm in some segments of society?

Oops! You’re right. My bad, I assumed they meant to do that by avoiding sex. Silly me. I’m old fashioned, too much so, I guess.

Thanks for dragging me into the world of today!

If they wouldn’t pay the girls TO get pregnant (welfare) then you’d see the teen pregnancy rate drop.
