Nurse forced to participate in abortion, speaks out

New York City, N.Y., Jul 28, 2009 / 05:12 am (CNA).- "It felt like a horror film unfolding," said Catherina Cenzon-DeCarlo, the Brooklyn nurse who says she was forced to aid an abortion against her will. Now Cenzon-DeCarlo is speaking out, describing the terror she felt as she was asked to sacrifice her religious convictions for the sake of her job.

Catherina Cenzon-DeCarlo, a devout Catholic, says she has been having nightmares and difficulty sleeping ever since the incident took place on May 24, reports the New York Post.

"I couldn't believe that this could happen," Cenzon-DeCarlo told the Post, describing how she was threatened with charges of insubordination and patient abandonment, which could result in possible loss of a job and nursing license, if she did not participate in the abortion.

Although she was told that it was an emergency and the woman would die if she did not assist, Cenzon-DeCarlo observed that the woman had not received the treatments typically given to a patient whose life is in danger as the hospital claimed it was.

She later found out that the hospital itself had declared the case a "Category II," meaning that it was not immediately life-threatening, and that there was a six-hour window for the operation to take place, allowing ample time for the hospital to find a replacement nurse who did not have moral objections to the procedure.

"I felt violated and betrayed," Cenzon-DeCarlo said.

The nurse had clearly stated that she was unwilling to aid in abortions during a job interview with Mount Sinai. She says she had put her beliefs in writing.

Cenzon-DeCarlo went on to explain that she was later told by two supervisors that she would need to sign a statement agreeing to participate in abortions if she wanted any more overtime shifts. Over the next month, she was designated only one overtime shift, instead of the eight or nine she was usually assigned, reported the New York Post.

Now, the Alliance Defense Fund is representing Cenzon-DeCarlo in a lawsuit that seeks to force Mount Sinai to surrender their federal funding because it has violated a federal rule protecting employees who morally object to controversial procedures.

The lawsuit also seeks damages on behalf of Cenzon-DeCarlo, as well as a restoration of her overtime shifts and a respect for her objections to abortion.

Now, the married mother of a year-old baby hopes the litigation will be enough to restore protection to her religious convictions. "I emigrated to this country in the belief that here religious freedom is sacred," she said. "Doctors and nurses shouldn't be forced to abandon their beliefs and participate in abortion in order to keep their jobs."

Yeah right, just because it’s a “law” makes it right. Remember, everything Hitler did was “legal”. This crap makes me sick....

She was lied to, told that the Mother’s life was in danger and effectively forced to help dismember a child

She should end up owning that hospital.

This gets me: they said they'd charge her with "patient abandonment," meaning she'd lose her nursing license and maybe even be expose to civil or criminal charges, if she refused to be an accomplice to to this abortion.

As if abortion isn't patient abandonment.

Abandonment, betrayal, and execution.

If it’s considered inhumane and degrading to desecrate the Koran of a captured enemy combatant, how much more are the consequences terrifying to a “captive” employee?

If she objects, she won’t even have the privilege of three squares and a bed, she’s out on the street. It’s cruel to force someone to betray their deepest held beliefs at the cost of their livelihood.

Catherina Cenzon-DeCarlo, a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, was instructed to assist in a late second-trimester abortion for a woman 22 weeks into her pregnancy.

#####

While other women who are experiencing a spontaneous labor/abortion at 22 weeks often beg doctors to do all they can to save their babies.

This nurse needs our prayers as this case goes forward. One consequence of the hospital's decision not to 'give' her more overtime shifts means that she will be able to spend more time with her own child.

Mount Sinai Hospital should just change their name to “Secularist General Hospital”. Their embracing of baby murder and undoubtedly, euthanasia, divorces them fully from the momentous historical event that occurred at Mount Sinai.

As I nurse, I would not participate in an abortion procedure under ANY circumstances. The only procedure in which I would be willing to assist would be a surgical removal of an ectopic implantation.

They could threaten me with the loss of my job, license...they could threaten me with jail! I would someday have to stand before my Lord and explain myself and nothing anyone on this earth could do to make me participate.

I don’t believe in this “except for the life of the mother” line.

More power to you!

I was not in the operating room and do not know what was said to her. For her sake, I hope she truly did believe the lies. I can not begin to allow myself to think of how she would feel otherwise, that would be too painful.

People need to prepare for any day they may be called upon to Stand for their Faith.

Typical hypocrisy of the left. They are always saying woman’s right to choose but apparently only when it comes to killing her unborn baby but not when it comes to a this woman’s right to choose not to participate.

She did have a choice.

Although she was told that it was an emergency and the woman would die if she did not assist, Cenzon-DeCarlo observed that the woman had not received the treatments typically given to a patient whose life is in danger as the hospital claimed it was.

If I observed that the procedure was anything other than the surgical removal of an ecotopic implantation, my choice would've been immediate (and probably pretty loud.)

Terror??

"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men." (2 Corinthians 5:10-11)

This is that nurse's choice after the fact. In part ...

Although the Brooklyn resident is still working at Mount Sinai, she's asking a court to order the hospital to pay unspecified damages, restore her shifts and respect her objections to abortion.

http://failedmessiah.typepad.com/failed_messiahcom/2009/07/mt-sinai-hospital-forces-nurse-to-help-abort-fetus-234.html

If I read it correct, in that order, she wants ...

1 ... money for damages

2 ... more money for overtime shifts

3 ... "respect her objections to abortion" so she could keep making money at that hospital.

I see what her priorities are. Oh, btw, this nurse is the niece of a Filipino bishop according to the link.

Terror??

Indeed, she gave up this golden opportunity to become a dry martyr AND to secure a better footing for prolife stands, by going with "the devil made me do it".
