It gets even more complex when you associate sunspot activity with ultraviolet light (the whole spectrum, not just the part that gives us deep sunburns). Top end scientist understand that, but dragging the herd into more complexity then they want to deal with, is very difficult. I once tried to do that in another field. Was very painful. Finally gave up. 5 years later they finally accepted the additional complexity.
