She will say that government is the way that we can most fully try to help the poor; and that we are morally obliged to try, even if all that we accomplish is to so save some and keep things overall from getting worse. Our aspirations count, not the failure to achieve the results we hope for.
I’ve thought about this in some depth. Tell this person to name one time in history a government has ever solved poverty or even come close. They can’t.
