An Iraqi man who tried to flee to Britain from the United States after allegedly running down his daughter for being "too Westernised" faces a possible murder charge after she died from her injuries.

Arizona police said that Faleh Hassan Almaleki ran down Noor Faleh Almaleki, 20, and her boyfriend's mother with his Jeep as the women crossed a car park in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria on October 20.

(snip)

Police said that Mr Almaleki, 48, fled the US after the attack, crossing the Mexican border and leaving his car at the town of Nogales. He then took a flight from Mexico City to London, arriving at Gatwick Airport on October 25.

Interviewed on arrival, Mr Almaleki told UK Border Agency officers that he was planning to spend a week visiting cousins in Glasgow, but he was denied entry because he had only $400 (£245) cash with him and his nominated sponsor in the UK was unemployed.

Officers also discovered on questioning Mr Almaleki that he lived in Arizona with his wife and seven children but when they tried to organise his return to the US they were told that he was wanted for assault over the attack on his daughter.

He was finally deported last Thursday and was taken to jail in Maricopa County, Arizona, to be held on charges of aggravated assault – charges that will now be upgraded.

"By his own admission, this was an intentional act and the reason was that his daughter had brought shame on him and his family," Stephanie Low, a Maricopa County prosecutor, told a court at the weekend. "This was an attempt at an honour killing."

Bail has been set at $5 million.

I looked at an article on Huff and Puff regarding this. I expressly wanted to read the comments. I believe it was approx. the 20th comment where GWB was blamed for this. For the most part, the comments were in the vein of “don’t paint Islam” with this brush and evil conservatives are blaming Islam... blah, blah, blah.

Mr.Almaleki was only fleeing the U.S. to get a fair trial in a sharia court.

I'm thinking he wanted to get to Scotland. In Scotland, The Pan-Am flight 103 bomber did just 12 day in jail for each of his murders before being sent home a free man.

A bit like this:
Good News! Shari'a Law in ... Texas! Assalam aleikum, y'all! The Second Court of Appeals of the State of Texas has rendered a ruling on the enforceability of shari'a judgments rendered by imams. According to the Texas appeals court, it's all good. You've heard of the Texas Courts. Ladies and gentlemen, make way for the Texas Islamic Courts!!! The parties will ask the courts to refer the cases for arbitration to Texas Islamic court within "Seven Days" from the establishment of the Texas Islamic Court panel of Arbitrators. The assignment must include ALL cases, including those filed against or on behalf of other family members related to the parties. Each party will notify the other party, Texas Islamic Court, and their respective attorneys, in writing of the assignment of all the above Cause Numbers from the above appropriate District Court to Texas Islamic Court. In general, private arbitration agreements are enforceable by government courts. Shari'a arbitration agreements are one type of private arbitration agreement. Without a theory as to why shari'a arbitration agreements shouldn't be enforced by the courts, I'm not sure what else the appeals court could have done in this case. Still, this is not a welcome development.

In fact there was a recent case on honour killings in which the court of appeal made some trenchant comments:

A senior judge yesterday condemned the notion of honour killings as an affront to English law. Lord Justice Wall declared that 'they are acts of simply sordid criminal behaviour' and 'had nothing to do with any concept of honour known to English law'. In an Appeal Court test case he ruled that the welfare of children should not be put at risk because of the 'honour' idea held in some Muslim families. The judge added: 'Arson, domestic violence and potential revenge likely to result in abduction or death are criminal acts which will be treated as such. The case, involving three children of a Pakistani family who were removed by social workers and taken into care, is the first childcare case touching on honour issues to reach the level of the Appeal Court, which sets precedents to be followed in other courts. The 41-year-old father of the children asked for the right to have contact with them, but was refused. He also asked that the children, who have been put in the care of white non-Muslim foster parents, should be sent to live with a Muslim family. ...
