Biggest Losers: Where Americans Aren't Moving
CNN via Yahoo ^ | 12/24/2009 | staff

1. California

Net loss: 98,798 residents

For years more people have fled the Golden State than have arrived. In the year ended July 1, California was the country's biggest loser, with nearly 100,000 more residents leaving than moving in.

Still, that was an improvement over earlier losses: In 2006 the net decline was 313,081.

2. New York

Net loss: 98,178 residents

Like California, New York is, historically, a major exporter of it citizens. The state depends upon foreign migration for its population growth. But also like California, New York's out-migration eased in the year ended July 1.

In 2006, nearly a quarter million more people left the state than moved in, two and a half times the 2009 total.

Still, New York is the decade's biggest loser: The state a total of 1,686,583 residents, more than anywhere else.

3. Michigan

Net loss: 87,339 residents

Not only is Michigan third highest in the nation for net migration losses, it also has this dubious distinction: 0.88% of the Great Lakes State's nearly 10 million residents left last year, the highest ratio in the nation.

The big problem, of course, is the ailing auto industry. Michigan's unemployment rate was the highest in the county in November, at 14.7%.

4. Illinois

Net loss: 48,249 residents

Residents leaving to seek work elsewhere and other migrants out-totaled those who moved in by nearly 50,000. That represents a steady, continuing pattern for Illinois: Net losses have prevailed throughout the decade. The difference between in-migrants and out peaked in 2006 at near 85,000.

5. Ohio

Net loss: 36,278 residents

Ohio is another Rust Belt state going through economic turmoil, much of it tied to the auto industry. More than 368,000 have left the state than moved in during the last decade.

"Yes, of course the root cause of the problem is the auto industry. Perhaps an inquiring reporter might ask why the auto industry is ailing?"

Well, of course it's obvious that they're failing because they didn't build the small, green cars everyone wanted.

Obviously. *rolls eyes*

NH has been a ‘destination’ for CaliFORNICATORS - especially the litte towns along the southern border (Milford, Bedford, Wilton, etc.) They come here, over-spend on real estate, get interviewed for the local liberal rags (Nashua Telecrap, Milford Crap-in-it) gushing over small town New England life, the beautiful fall, wonderful snow - a couple of winters with 10+ feet of snow, black flies in the spring and they beat-feet out of town. One couple of surgeons overpaid for A VERY old house located in town center - they left over a year ago and the house still hasn’t sold - it’s interesting to watch it deteriorate due to neglect. The only really good thing about winter and black flies is that they are so successful at driving out these libtards.

The “people” leaving CA are the same as cancer cells speading from a malignant tumor. The metastasis of political liberalism....

Sadly, we all lose when Californians move out of their state.

Sadly, too many are moving to one of the last few sane places on Earth.
The Nation of Texas.

I don’t live in Texas, but have plenty of friends that do.
Having spent 1995-2005 in West Los Angeles (under the reign of
Rep. Henry Waxman), I’ve told my Texas friends to have no compunction at
giving the arriving Californicators a clear message.

“This is NOT California. If you even have a shred of hope of turning
Texas into California...remember people perished and then exacted
bayoneted people that wanted to abort the concept of Texas.
In the words of the Californians to fleeing Okies...
“Welcome, now go home!’ “.

You are exactly right. The migration of liberals to the conservative states is not good. I have lived in North Texas most of my life and have always felt confident that a majority of us were on the same page politically. I have never had to worry about how my congressman was going to vote on an issue - my only concerns have been how Kay Bailey was going to vote, but she has usually stuck with us on the big issues.

Over the past year, I have begun reading the editorial page and comment section of my local newspaper. I am shocked at the number of angry liberals I find there. I would have to say that the liberal commentors outweigh the conservatives ones by 10-1! Last week I was a bumper sticker on a car supporting abortion. I would have never seen something like that 10 years ago.

I'm around those parts. It's interesting. I don't think locals can no longer afford to live in those areas. Yeah, locals can't buy oceanfront property in those places. People who live on the nicest land are from away, unless they bought the land a while ago. Otherwise, it doesn't seem like things are that expensive in the midcoast (Rockland) area. There's a Walmart in Rockland. And unless you want the best waterfront land in the Camden or Bar Harbor, you can get something. Taxes in Maine are high.

People in Bar Harbor and Camden certain vote differently from the people in places like Wisasset, Waldoboro, Warren, etc. Camden and Bar Harbor are 2 little pockets of Liberalism in a primarily conservative area. (See the voting results of Prop 1 and Prop 5 last month).

There are some seriously good deals on oceanfront land in Washington County.

Well, now the rest of the country is beginning to truly understand our disdain for carpetbaggers in the postwar south, as well as the finer point of historical distinction, between a yankee, who visits, and a damn yankee, who stays. Substitute Californian, and the shoe fits.

I don’t know where California’s expatriates are moving, but New Yorkers and other New England liberals are laying waste to Virginia, North Carolina and other southern states.

isn't it funny that so many of those who leave take their failed expectations of big govt with them- the California expats ruined western Colorado during the time we lived there

Still happening: won't let us drill our rich natural gas fields ( one person who lived on a road where gas-related water trucks ran got asthma it hit the local paper like a tsunami and they killed the gas industry and put 7000 local residents out of work).

One endangered squawfish- take water rights that supported generations of family ranches off the table- got to save the fish), no coal fired power plants ( even tho we're sitting on one of the west's great reserves, got to use windmills instead- even tho they don't supply enough power and are all on the eastern slope. I could go on, but you get the picture.

Yes I know. Hannah and her mom never found a government spending program to oppose and always found a tax to impose.
