HARBOUR MILLE, Newfoundland, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Some people in the Canadian community of Harbour Mille say they are puzzling over the unidentified flying object they saw over Newfoundland's south coast.
Darlene Stewart told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. she saw the mysterious object zoom missile-like overhead, trailing flames or heavy smoke.

The UFO sightseeing Canucks must have meant this.
Time to call up a few CF-18s to try to intercept it...
Could it have been San Fran Nan out for a ride on her broom?
Anchorage Alaska residents puzzled over a huge UFO sighting there some years ago, but when I called the local paper to let them know it was just a buddy of mine and his friends that had placed candles inside dry cleaning bags and set them aloft-—they weren’t interested in running the story. Mystery and magic sell papers, explanations apparently don’t.
Darlene Stewart told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. she saw the mysterious object zoom missile-like overhead, trailing flames or heavy smoke.
"I knew it wasn't an airplane. It was something different," Stewart said.
She took a picture of the object but it was clear from the picture what the thing was.
Another witness, Elly Pardy, told the CBC it appeared to be out over the middle of the bay.
"It appeared to come out of the ocean," she said. "It's kind of scary because you don't know if something is being set off out in the bay, (or) if someone is doing experiments."
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police sent an officer Tuesday to investigate the reports.

Just a contrail? Since it was at sunset, the dark portion could just be a portion of the contrail in shadow.
I call that the “chupacabra effect”. A newspaper will receive a picture of what they know is roadkill of some sort, but they will inevitably run the story as if members of the community think it might be a Chupacabra.
It is either that or some members of the press think Chupacabra is Spanish for roadkill.
Residents in Harbour Mille, a tiny community on Newfoundland's south coast, want to know what they saw in the sky Monday night.
Darlene Stewart said she was outside taking pictures of the sunset when she saw something fly overhead.
She snapped a picture of the object in an attempt to zoom in on it to see what it was.
"Even with the camera, I couldn't make it out until I put it on the computer," she told CBC News. "I knew then it wasn't an airplane. It was something different."
Stewart's picture shows a blurry image of what appears to be some kind of missile-like object emitting either flames or heavy smoke.
Elly Pardy also saw the object, as did other residents, and reported what she saw to the RCMP and federal fisheries officers.
"It appeared to come out of the ocean," she told CBC News. "It was like it was in the middle of the bay."
An RCMP officer was in the community Tuesday to investigate the reports.
Pardy said she'd like to know what the object was.
"It's kind of scary because you don't know if something is being set off out in the bay, [or] if someone is doing experiments," she said.
The residents plan to be outdoors again Tuesday evening to see if there is a similar sight in the sky.
Yes...people want to remain ignorant while being entertained.
A fact long ago discovered by W. R. Hearst and Edward Willis Scripps.
Once in a while, a meteor will travel laterally through the atmosphere and look more or less like that. I saw one once, and it was freaky. ...looked like a burning piece of trash, going down very slowly in comparison to what we usually see. It was probably headed away and only looked like it had a steep trajectory.
Heavy Smoke?
Come on!
Earth launched projectiles (heavy smoke) should not be classified as UFOs or the Lil Leprachans hiding your keys.
LOL to myself.
That looks like a very healthy Turd Missile and nothing else.
When I was about 12 I saw something falling from the sky at just before twilight. It was getting dark, but not yet. All the kids in the neigborhood saw it and the best we could describe it, it looked like a burning plane crashing. It was a huge fireball, and we were sure it was close. The next day we found out it was a meteor that landed two states over!
INTERESTING.

Many are seen to come out of the ocean and out of large lakes.
