Did Michelle Obama Send the Wrong Message With Obesity Comments?
ABC News ^ | 5 Feb 10 | HUMA KHAN

Michelle Obama has earned accolades for making healthy living and eliminating childhood obesity a priority as first lady. But when it came down to personalizing the issue in relation to her daughters, the remarks touched a nerve with some, and praise from others.

The first lady made the issue of healthy eating personal last week at an event in Alexandria, Va., where she kicked off a campaign addressing the issue of childhood obesity.

"We went to our pediatrician all the time," Obama said. "I thought my kids were perfect -- they are and always will be -- but he [the doctor] warned that he was concerned that something was getting off balance."

"I didn't see the changes. And that's also part of the problem, or part of the challenge. It's often hard to see changes in your own kids when you're living with them day in and day out," she added. "But we often simply don't realize that those kids are our kids, and our kids could be in danger of becoming obese. We always think that only happens to someone else's kid -- and I was in that position."

Obama said the doctor suggested she first look at her daughters' body mass index (BMI). The minor changes she subsequently made in their daily habits, Obama said, made all the difference.

The first lady's comments have stirred up the Web and medical world, and have drawn both criticism and praise. Some say Obama should not have personalized the issue and brought up her daughters. Even if it is for the greater public good, critics say, it does not bode well for their self-image. .....

The first lady's office would not comment on the criticism.

I think the doctor was referring to the kids having deranged parents. Michelle personalized it in a way that she was most closely connected with.

...people just looked to her for help with their wardrobe

and for continued uses for old tablecloths, shower liners, and beach towels. It's a two-fer.

ROTFLMAO.

I still remember all the flap about that ONE dress, from White House, Black Market stores. It’s the only thing I’ve seen her in that could pass for (wait for it...)

...”Fashion”...

I think fat ass has self esteem issues.

Precisely.

We have all known someone who delights in pointing the spotlight of criticism on others, knowing that it is off of them.

For someone to do this to their own daughters is borderline psychotic.

I am no fan of Michelle 0bama, but wow - what is the problem here? She just stated that while she thought her girls were healthy and eating properly, testing showed that there were imbalances, so she made adjustments. That’s a good message for ANYONE

1. If she really felt that way, she would have used herself as the example and left her daughters out of it.

2. Michelle helped hand-pick the Surgeon General of the United States - Regina Benjamin.

The Surgeon General’s Weight Struggle

In an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Dr. Benjamin responded to the criticism. “Health and being healthy and being fit is not about a dress size,” she said.

Do you see a problem here?

Michelle has thrown her daughters to the media wolves vis a vis weight and obesity, and had a major role in this woman wearing an admiral's uniform?

Gawd....those poor kids. Between ‘mommy’ saying her kids were ‘fat’.....to ‘daddy’ saying he doesn’t want his kids ‘punished with a baby’ (kids are punishment for a romp). Unbelievable. *shakes head*
