When this volcano erupted in the past centuries it led to famine in Europe and record low winters in NE U.S., even froze the Mississippi above New Orleans.

I wonder when the next glaciation period will start. Probably has already. This will be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Seriously, keep your eye on Baffin Island. That's where the ice builds up that slides down and crushes Chicago. I don't think that Baffin Island is where the Laurentide Ice Sheet began. What I wonder though is what the effect of the ash on the polar and Greenland ice.

Millions of gallons of JetA have been saved.
Wait, they are still making it.
The price of Jet fuel in those areas should drop drastically. Yea right.

Aloha 'Dita!
Trouble is that Europe is too close to the event...and down wind as well.
The Europeans would normally be delighted by stranded Americans, seeking lodging and dining at their restaurants, waiting out the event......except for the news today of Obama attacking the US banking system and subsequently their credit cards. Now it's a matter of real concern.

My husband is in Italy on business. He is supposed to fly home tomorrow evening through Amsterdam. Waiting to see what happens. Sunsets are no consolation. Supposed to connect to home in AMS the following morning. Let me know what happens.

I am in currently in Germany (outside of Frankfurt) on business and was supposed to fly back to the Philippines (currently working as an expat there) this Sunday. Saw on the news this morning that Frankfurt airport was closed down this morning. Called the airline this morning and they don’t know how my flight will be effected. They told me that almost all airports in Northern Europe have been closed down as well.
Have shuffled my schedule to stay in Germany for another week to avoid the nightmare of flying out Sunday. Will enjoy a few extra days sight-seeing and will visit another client while I’m here. Thankfully I can still be “connected” to the office.

Informative listing of the Laki fissure eruption pictures and effects. I think the greatest worry in Iceland now is that the current eruptions might trigger Katla, an extremely dangerous volcano that is overdue for an eruption based upon the historical record.

I think we may get to see what triggers Ice Ages if Obama doesn't get us all killed first. There are numerous interesting theories as to the cause of ice ages but I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the Earth periodically vents millenniums of interior heat build up via volcanic activity much like old faithful vents steam. The resulting ash and sulfur clouds would cause increased global cooling. Higher ocean temperatures from underwater volcanoes may increase moisture in the atmosphere. These factors both could combine to trigger the Earth's history of recurring ice ages. Low solar activity and the Earth's eccentric orbit at the time may also play an important part. I've been thinking that I would not be surprised if there was some connection between solar activity and volcanic/earthquake activity on earth.
The sun's magnetic field varies according to whatever is going on deep inside it. It's the solar magnetic field which seems to have an effect on sunspot activity and Earth's weather. We are seeing an unusually weak solar field right now.
The Earth's magnetic field appears to be caused by convection in the Earth's iron core.
The Earth's magnetic field may be interacting with the solar magnetic field in ways that transmit energy and force into the interior of the Earth.

Oh that´s really bad :-(
I finally had to cancel my trip to london too.
I just heard in the news that the airport in my city
will close in the evening too.
So i´m not able to even get to France where i could take
the eurostar to london. Ok it would be still possible
for me to get there but then again spend 22 hours in a train? i guess not ;-)
I hope you are soon able to get back home save.
greetings
