WASHINGTON, D.C. Maybe it was the noonday, tax day sun, but partway through Thursdays Tea Party rally, I was reminded of the famous Groucho Marx quip about clubs and membership, only backwards.
Based on the New York Times survey Thursday morning of the demographic makeup of the Tea Party movement, Id never make it past A, B and C of the Tea Party eligibility questionnaire.
Turns out, most of the members are apparently older, white Republican men.
There were definitely those at Thursdays rally, along with older, white, possibly Republican women, middle-aged, white, presumably Republican men and women and one lone black man named Bob who argued adamantly against the proposition that the crowd may not have been entirely representative of America as a demographic whole.
But since he was spending more time taking photographs of other protesters than getting in on the anti-tax, anti-Pelosi, anti-Obama, anti-Washington, pro-Constitution action, he could have been a federale so seemed best left unquoted. In fact, since he was the only black person I could see and I dont want to blow his cover, lets call him Fred instead and just hope his real name isnt Fred.
Demographically, Im arguably une femme dun certain age, but the fact I know what that means may disqualify me outright because anything foreign, especially French, is dodgy.
(Tea Partiers shun any hint that they have anything to do with Birthers, but the Times survey showed 30% think the president of the United States was born somewhere other than the U.S. and 18% arent sure, which makes them eminently qualified for Birther membership even if they dont want to be in the club).
Which goes to my other major disqualifying quality: Im not only from another country, Im from another country that has had a government-run health care system for decades and where the armed anti-government militias are constitutionally bound to name themselves after French existentialist philosophers.
The thing is, with their anti-communist headgear and kooky save a seal, club a liberal placards, the Tea Partiers seem possessed by a genuine esprit de corps, pardon my French.
In an effort to better grasp the mystique of membership, I asked a girl named Emily, 22, what it was that inspired her to write a sign that said, Smash Left-Wing Scum, that seemed to be getting a lot of media attention.
I was mostly thinking, How can I get media attention with my sign, she said with a shrug.
Beyond the rally on the busy D.C. lunchtime sidewalk, two African-American women in their 50s commented on all the excitement.
It happens every tax day, said one woman who, when asked to elaborate beyond, It happens every tax day, insisted on going unattributed.
Look, you still have bitterness because a black man was elected president of this country and these people cant stand the idea of taking orders from him as head of the government, she said.
Its really insulting, said the second woman, when you look at what went on under the last administration in this country and none of these people made a peep. Get real: This isnt about taxes.
Maybe thats the ineffable essence of the Tea Party movement; its about whatever you want it to be about, and not about anything you dont want it to be about. Except maybe for the people watching.
Amen. And start harping on spending. Everybody loves Christmas, but nobody wants the bills to come due. Can't separate the two.
I got tax rebates from the last administration, unemployment was 5% deficits where only a half tril vs 1.3 and terrorists where taking it on the chin. Thats why we didn’t protest.
She’s not French and her real name is Schmug Libbitch.
With this kind of Government, how could healthcare be anything but a roaring success?

I seem to recall a hell of a dust-up about illegal immigration, even with full employment.
Ummm, so you thought it was bad then, and now it's exponentially worse and YOU don't make a peep? It's bad when a white guy is president, but okay when a black guy is president? Who's the racist again, remind me?
I was at the tea party in Boston. The counter protesters were a starkly homogeneous group. Pasty white emo college kids...
Doesn't it say more about the black community that they blindly follow this marxist instead of joining those of us who protest?
I know of Tea Party people who are uncomfortable with the RKBA and abortion issues. They are giving the impression that the movement is made up of a bunch of tightwads concerned only with personal wealth. I reckon some are but a lot of us put freedom first!
Of course, the Mindless Media never asks where the younger Tea Partiers are. . .
And the answer, of course, is. . . WORKING!!
The evidence from those two items show she obviously was not at any Tea Party rally but merely took the talking point emailed her by the DNC and rewrote it as a "news" report.
I heard it explained the best possible way on talk radio
...the current tea partiers were not having tea parties during the President Bush administration because they were too busy at work...they had jobs.
I think the media must be keying in on this angle. They keep reporting that the Tea Partiers are of above average income. They can't figure out that nobody prospers if America fails. For every Tea Partier that can travel to Washington, there are dozens just trying to get by.
Ms. Van Dusen, would you get us the demographics of Code Pink? Thanks.
America voted in This Turd,so the Country can’t be that Racist......
If you really think those quotes weren’t from leftist infiltrators, “you would be completely misreading my comments”.
Uhh, guess who's paying the taxes?
It's extremely unlikely someone living off the Federal teat, not paying taxes would be part of the Tea Party doncha think.
There’s stupid, and then there’s liberal stupid.
I believe social media and email are two of the most powerful tools we have in countering the lies and spin.
