Spirit Airlines' New Seats Don't Recline
ABC NEWS ^ | April 22, 2010 | SCOTT MAYEROWITZ

Spirit Airlines -- the folks who are about to start charging for carry-on bags -- now have a new change for passengers: seats that don't recline.

And we're not talking about just those exit row seats where reclining could slow egress. Spirit is stopping everybody's ability to lean back and enjoy the flight.

So why do this? To squeeze in more paying passengers on each flight, of course.

The Florida-based airline is putting a nice spin on this, calling the new seats "pre-reclined" seats. But in reality, they are just locked in the upright position. Since the seats don't move, they have fewer moving parts; they therefore weigh less and save the airline expensive fuel costs.

The first new Airbus 320 with the new upright seats went into service March 14, flying between Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Washington, D.C.

This airline charges a pittance for air fare. Travelers demand that.

But people get all p o'd if they don't get first class service (or what used to be) for the small amount they are willing to pay

If travelers don't like it, pay more to fly another airline. Simple, free market economics.

For a one-hour flight...I wouldn’t care. Otherwise, this is a problem for most passengers.

I’ll make this bet. The minute that the FAA says that a plane can remove all seats and just tie you to a pole onboard the plane...this will be the first airline to attach the poles and tie you onto them as you board. Laughing? I’ll suggest that a DC to NY City flight like this will exist within three years....and a Vegas to LA flight shortly after that.

Heck, just paralize the passengers and stack them like
cord wood, you would’t need boarding ramps just conveyor
belts.

It’s not like the angle you can recline on a typical coach seat makes that much of a difference anyway.

Actually on short haul flights this makes perfect sense.

Long haul is another story - you need to be able to change positions.

Personally, with the exception of first class (which I’ve never experienced) I wouldn’t call the 2-inch movement possible in current jets of all airlines “reclining.”

You pay meat wagon rates they treat you like...meat.

I am certain you can find a first class seat for $900-1500 per RT flight. Stop whining!

Next we’ll be standing up holding onto straps like on a bus or metro. :)

Heck just have seats across the back and everyone sits
on someone elses lap, only need a few long seat belts in that case

If the bankrupt ones would die and stay dead it might be, but they don't. They keep flying and eat their capital and undercut everyone else. The airline industry is a collosal mess and it needs reorganization, stat.

I’m glad that I don’t hold stock in them...if I did, I might bring my ‘friend’ in to their headquarters to have a ‘discussion’ about my investment.

I like this. I hate it when the person in front of me reclines their seat and takes up part of my space.

And no, I never recline my seat. I can sleep sitting up just fine.

I agree with you. IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT...DON’T FLY IT. People just love to complain.

Before long, they’ll only have leg and seat room to fit an anorexic dwarf. The rest of us will have to pay double for two seats and still be miserable.

I travel by air quite a bit. I never recline my seat unless the seat behind me is open. It’s rare if someone does that courtesy for me.

I like this policy. Not that I would travel Spirit which as far as I can tell is the American version of Ryanair.
