Or maybe the fountains of the deep overwhelmed the reef. But I guess considering some sort of giant flood is ridiculous.

Bang on! The flood of Noah’s day explains a lot of the unusual undersea discoveries. Most will scoff at giving a bible account any credibility.

Considering that sea level was some 300-400 feet lower at the height of the last ice age, the odds of giant floods during the past 10,000 years is pretty close to 100%.
