Conservatives Need A Fresh Issue
VirtueOnline ^ | May 20, 2010 | Mike McManus

Democrats had more reason than Republicans to be happy with primary results this week. In the only contest between the two parties, Democrat Mark Critz defeated Republican Tim Burns by a 53-46 vote for the seat of the late Rep. John Murtha.

The defeat of five-term Arlen Specter by the dynamic Joe Sestak, will increase the odds the Pennsylvania Senate seat will be retained by Democrats this fall.

While Conservatives were elated by the wide 24 point margin won by Rand Paul for the Republican nomination to the Senate in Kentucky, the seat is already held by Republicans.

What is increasingly clear is that Republicans do not have a fresh positive message for the electorate. Their opposition to President Obama and his Health Care Reform will motivate their base in primary contests, but they need to broaden their appeal to win Independents.

What conservatives need is a fresh cause, one that will appeal to both social conservatives committed to strengthening families - and economic conservatives who want to cut federal spending.

Marriage could be that issue.

Republicans control 49 of the 50 Congressional seats with the highest rates of married people, and Democrats, all 50 seats with the highest percentage of the never-married.

Therefore, I suggest a three-part strategy to strengthen marriage: reduce divorce by reforming No Fault Divorce, reward the responsible spouse, and increase the marriage rate.

A interesting look at the ways of reducing divorce, thus saving taxpayer money, by amending the atrociously anti-male divorce laws.

Here's the key quote from the article:

"The current system gives the man an incentive not to get married because he knows that if things are not going well, she can file for divorce and get the kids and generous child support," says Ron Grignol, of Defending Our Father's House, a Catholic group.

"The person who files for divorce, without an allegation of fault, would be considered "irresponsible," and would have to accept less property and less child custody than the more responsible parent. That would give men an incentive to marry, and preserve more marriages."

None of these bills has become law, but they demonstrate how to make marriage a fresh issue.

New issue?

Banking and the generation of money, and the federal reserve. If the dems figure that one out before we do, nothing else we could be right about will matter.

Conservatives don’t need to go looking for ‘causes.’ Conservative principles should be constant and timeless. Republicans can go do what ever they want.

For every liberal issue, there is an equal and opposite conservative issue.

Yep, my liberal acquaintances always think they've got me in a discussion on that, but I tell them, if we're going to end hand-outs for the poor, etc., then we're ending it for everybody!!

Dems had more reason to be happy?
Spector, who had voted with Obama was defeated.
Rand Paul, who is about as far away from Obama as possible, won in Kentucky.
Blanche Lincoln, a loyal Obamaist is struggling to keep her seat.
And Critz, in a 2 to 1 democrat district in PA, ran away from Obama, and got a 53-46 win to retain a seat held by democrats for decades.

The electorate doesn't like health care, illegal immigration, nationalization of industries and incessant supplication to every two-bit nation on the planet. If the Republicans grow some fleshy spheroids, they will clean their clocks.

How many grants and loans and stuff have gone to companies owned by husbands and wives of people working for Obama?

There was that window company that Stossel brought up.

Conservatives Need A Fresh Issue

Why do conservatives need a fresh issue, why not take care of existing issues?

What conservatives need is a fresh cause

I guess losing our national sovereignty and 10% unemployment is too stale.

Far too narrow of an issue specifically considering those who have been burned in some way by the sub-issues you mention. Broader economic issues like debt, taxation, etc, hit everyone. It is a matter of personalizing the message.

NOT SO FAST!!! Sestak is very vulnerable. First of all, there are a lot of questions as to why he was "relieved of Command" as an Admiral in the Navy. Some dirt is starting to be uncovered there. And, THE BIGGIE......

Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) is not letting this thing die about the White House offering Sestak a "job", probably Sec. of the Navy, to drop out of the Primary race against Arlen Specter. He's called for an investigation. If the WH did that, it is a felony and Sestak could be facing "Contempt of Congress" Charges if he doesn't come clean.

How about actually undoing all bad laws, undoing all bad legislation, and ending the creation of very bad solutions to all issues, no matter how old/new they are, and then actually replacing them with decent, commonsense, free market, conservative laws, legislation, and solutions on all issues, from now on? As an example, if ObamaCare really can’t be undone, then what’s the point in campaigning as a conservative with solutions to a variety of issues? Ditto, with the ongoing problems of: taxes, entitlement programs, big government, over-regulations, the national debt, illegal immigration, lack of a federal balanced budget, activist judges, political correctness in all of its forms,...?
