Red & Black cafe shows Portland officer the door, won't sell him coffee again (Oregon)

In mid-May, Portland police Officer James Crooker went to Southeast Portland on a patrol call. With a few minutes to spare, he decided to get a coffee.

So, he popped into the Red & Black cafe on Southeast 12th Avenue near Oak Street, bought a coffee and was heading out when a customer approached him, saying she appreciates the hard job that police officers do every day in Portland.

One of the co-owners of the cafe, John Langley, has another point of view. While the officer and customer were chatting, he walked up and asked Crooker to leave, saying he felt uncomfortable having a uniformed officer in the vegan cafe.

Short advice to the cafe owners: Grow up. Learn some manners along the way.

I often say to my friends in CA... “Portland is full of people who thought Berkeley was too Conservative.”

What kind of “veggies” are in the cafe? Maybe the green leafy kind sold by the bag?

"If it happened again, I wouldn't serve him."

I can admire a person with the courage to support their beliefs in spite of the possible monetarily loss involved. I have the courage not to do business with that café to support my beliefs.

The report says John Langley is a co-owner so the views of others owners could play a part. Criminals also have an interest in a café they can be sure won’t have police eating there.

For those unfamiliar, this is the heart of Portland, Oregon and why it is as bad a liberal ghetto as SF.

Why has no one asked why a cop would go in this place to begin with. Probably the only city with as many coffee shops per capita as Seattle.

the officers would probably take a few minutes to get coffee in a place that WOULD serve them before moseying over to check out the robbery at the Red Cafe.

The cafe draws vegans -- of course -- along with homeless people and animal-rights and environmental activists who Langley said have been targets of police abuse and harassment.

Probably a place where peaceful flotilla aid workers congregate, too.

Also from the article:
“A former Marine who served in Iraq, Crooker didn’t take the incident to heart.”It was not personal,” he said. “He was being hostile to my uniform,” he said. “

The officer is truly a gentleman and a credit to the Corps & the police force.

I understand from a worker there they leave thousands of dollars in an unlocked box in the office.

This is the first sentence, 2nd paragraph from their website in the “About Us” section = “We strive to provide a community space that is safe and welcoming to all.”

Looks like a crock of crap about welcoming to all - hmmmmmm

Of you asked O-Hole about this, he would probably say “The officer acted stupidly for going to a know leftist cafe”.

Red & Black Cafe just held a fundraising party for this printing company on May 28:

(from Red & Black Cafe’s blog) emphasis mine

“About Eberhardt Press

Eberhardt Press, established in 2004, is dedicated to bringing ANARCHIST and ANTI-AUTHORITARIAN VOICES to print. We publish original titles as well as classic revolutionary texts that are out of print and in danger of fading from memory. By operating a small-scale offset printing and bindery facility, we can produce publications at a fraction of the cost of paying a commercial printer. Therefore we are able to offer our hand-crafted books and pamphlets less expensively to the public.”

I really think the whole vegan thing is disgusting and impractical due to the lack of protein and other vitamins and minerals that need to be received from meat. I have a liberal-leftist cousin who recently graduated(got indoctrinated and brainwashed) from college and at her graduation she served nothing but vegan food because our family never serves the “stuff,” oh I meant to say crap, she wants to eat at our parties. Boy, she’s in for a world of hurt this year, seeing how my family gets Thanksgiving, I’m loading everything with meat, quite possibly the dessert if I can find a way. ;)

I LOL'd at this comment at yelp:

According to the dudes on M4M on Craigslist, the bathroom has great action.

The high school goths girls with that hang out there are on the weekends are pretty easy if you mention you are old enough to buy a case of PBR. Try to have a place close by to drink it though because they usually hate walking.

Probably not going to happen. Some people are just meant to die stupid. Darwin would tell us to stand back and let it happen. Part of the natural order of things and hopefully, the new policy of Portland, Oregon’s Finest.
