TALLAHASSEE — As he positions himself to the center in the U.S. Senate race, Gov. Charlie Crist on Friday vetoed a measure requiring most women to pay for an ultrasound and hear a description of the fetus before they can have an abortion.

"This bill places an inappropriate burden on woman seeking to terminate a pregnancy," Crist said in his veto message.

Anti-abortion advocates and Crist's Republican critics in the Legislature immediately pounced on the decision. John Stemberger, head of the Florida Family Policy Council, called the veto "profoundly disappointing" and said it's now "crystal clear that he's pro-abortion."

Much worse than pond scum.

Even Hercules would not have wanted to clean out Crist’s stables...

Truth is an inappropriate burden for some. What’s the harm in just seeing what it looks like? This in fact changes the minds of some seeking abortion. It’s not forcing them to decide a particular way, it’s empowering them to make a better informed decision.

This is just strategery. He’s going to fake left to go ultra-hard-right-conservative when he gets elected to the senate.

This is just a fake out!

He’s electable!

You can’t be seriously going to vote for a back-waxer instead, are you? Do you want to be a loser?

You right-wing conservatives need to learn that only moderate and left-leaning conservatives can get the Dem vote needed to win elections.

Charlie Crist has become the de facto Democrat candidate in this race.

Kendrick Meek has become the forgotten man. Are the liberals of Florida sure they want to go down this road? There they go, dissing the man simply because of his race, and going for the white guy.

Where is Jessie Jackson when you need him?

I’m always hearing libs say that conservatives need to be more liberal and water down their values. At the same time they also say liberals need to be more liberal, something closer to Vladimir Lennin or something. If Republicans have to be liberal in order to win elections, isn’t that like losing your soul to gain the world? As far as I’m concerned the communists have already taken over one party, and is trying for the other.

I am against abortion. But he is right. Government has no right to force the procedure at the expense of the taxpayer or the individual seeking the abortion...

Government and its control is grand as it is...

I agree with this. Either a procedure is legal or it's not. I don't want the gubmint requiring that I get (and pay for) certain medical services. I thought conservatives were against that sort of thing.

Not when it comes to abortion. Why not require them to get a framed picture of the ultrasound and hang it on their wall for 30 days? Why not require them to see the remains of someone else's abortion?

“Government and its control is grand as it is...”

Yes, you’re so right. Nothing must be allowed to stand in the way of a mother’s right to murder her child.

Perhaps we should have the police stop traffic for all women seeking abortions.

Abortion is not a federal issue. It is a state issue. It was illegally taken as a federal issue by a criminal supreme court.

Abortion should be banned by every state in the union. It is murder.

Of course, that doesn’t mean abortions will stop, just like murders haven’t stopped despite being illegal.

"I thought conservatives were against that sort of thing. "

Hey conservatives are against the government being involved in anything except abortion, oil spills and being the world's policeman.

Don't forget drugs. Conservatives are all about growing and feeding the beast when it involves militarizing police to kick in the doors of "bad people" who smoke and sell substances the government deems "bad".

I’m really confused about this Bill! Two days ago, I read here that women would be asked if they wanted to see an ultra-sound. Then earlier today, it was posted that they were required to see an U-S. Now it’s that they’re also required to pay for the U-S. Which version is correct?

Well I’m assuming they have to pay for it, unless the law would force the doctors to provide free ultrasounds? Someone’s paying for it.

Then there's federal tort reform, where the Congress, without any delegated power that I can find, take over regulation of state courts and state jury awards.

The politicians simply adopt the big government ideas of both sides, and adopt the small government ideas of neither side, and VOILA, here we are!
