McCain breaks away as critical support eludes Hayworth
Arizona Capitol Times ^ | July 2, 2010 | Jeremy Duda

First, it was Sarah Palin. Then it was Arizona Right to Life and the National Rifle Association. Most recently, the revered National Review gave its imprimatur to McCain.

When Hayworth entered the race in January, McCain was at his most vulnerable point in decades. Polling showed McCain had a lead within the margin of error and was struggling to redefine himself as a Republican loyalist. But polls now show McCain with a solid lead.

Baker said the McCain campaign may have engineered a sort of domino effect: Each endorsement shows the next group that backing McCain is a safer bet than it may have first appeared, and Republican voters seem to be following the same trend.

McCain has focused Hayworth’s reputation in Congress as a pork-barrel spender, a serious offense to many conservatives. And the senator has run an undeniably negative campaign against Hayworth, openly mocking him and attacking his credibility.

The McCain campaign has posted videos online poking fun at Hayworth for questioning the authenticity of President Barack Obama’s birth certificate, suggesting that allowing gay marriage could pave the way for men to wed horses, and especially for appearing in a 2007 infomercial urging people to take advantage of “free money” from government grants.

The infomercial for the National Grants Conferences has been the most damning revelation yet, combining the promotion of government spending with a host of informercial stereotypes. It prompted the popular FOX News personality Glenn Beck to declare that Hayworth’s campaign is over.

If McCain had a more conservative challenger, National Review wrote, the endorsement might have gone elsewhere. But while Hayworth’s record is conservative, the article read, it isn’t conservative enough to make a compelling case against McCain.

“He may not be Marco Rubio, but he’s not Arlen Specter either,” the editorial said of McCain.

But this stuff should be easy to refute. Doesn’t Hayworth even have a Fight The Smears like the BS Obama had?

You can’t just assert that something is a lie and then say “look it up”. People who aren’t informed just walk away saying, “Well it must be true, then.”

Like I said, I don’t care, it’s typical negative ad stuff and wouldn’t persuade me one way or the other. But you seem to care.

One I know of is the comment stating he had to pay back illegal Abramhoff money before he could run... fact is he had to pay off old campaign debt before he could run... had nothing to do with Abramhoff and he was actually CLEARED on wrong-doing regarding Abramhoff... what I find unconscionable was McCain as head of the committee holding hearings at the time held back info on certain people in the Abramhoff debacale to use to his own personal end...... it is how he brought people like Ralph Reed and Grover on board to suddenly endorse him in 2008. JD would take years to become as slippery and sleezy and John McCain.

That's your right. But moving McCain so far and forcing him to take positions in opposition to his previous positions is a major success. More importantly, he's locked himself in to some of these. Take the victory and use it. Don't fight battles that are over.

Again.. you sho a lack of knowledge about McCain and Arizona... EVERY TIME her runs here he runs to the right and the reverts to things like McCain-Kennedy as soon as he is re-elected... this is the first time he has actually had anyone in the GOP oppose him in the primary and he has grown complacent and lazy and rarely even appears in Arizona short of election day.. even the dems have never really given him much to worry about here..but he still always pretends to be conserative until his seat is safe for another six years.

McCain is the poster boy for term limits, I think you probably don't know a tenth of the stuff about him that us who live here know.... like he regularly gets free weekend gambling trips for him and his buddies on the Indian Reservations around the country... they know who their friend is.... his campaign held one of the sleeziest pro-illegal immigration men in this country -- Juan Hernandez -- and after Michelle Malkin exposed this Juan went underground but bragged he was still on the campaign and to this day AFAIK he is still part of the McCain team.. as the same people are running the campaign here in AZ and unlike against Obama they are using scorched earth against JD to make him look like the anti-Christ and McCain look like the next coming.

Thank you! And it only took 294 posts!

This is exactly the kind of refutation I’m talking about. If the Hayworth campaign can’t get their act together enough that their supporters don’t have this stuff at their fingertips, it’s no wonder he’s losing. And look at the history of the polling. Arizona Republicans gave him a chance, but he’s no Marco Rubio.

“Shut up, that’s why!” wins nobody any arguments or any friends. If you’re going to win, you’ll have to fight.

Family history notwithstanding, he has some health issues stemming from his service. I’m not saying he has to go the full Byrd, if he falls ill that will do the trick.

Frankly, I don’t know why he hasn’t retired. If I had a hot rich wife, I would be retired now.

I know exactly why he hasn’t retired, his marriage is a sham, it’s pretty much common knowledge here in AZ she has a long-time lover, and his entire life is in DC and the attention he gets with his antics, he is actually one of the most dangerous Republicans in DC and needs to be defeated.

JD needs money..... it’s that simple, McCain has tons. I told people here long ago that McCain OWNS the AZ GOP. His son used to run the AZ Chamber of Commerce and they call the shots with the GOP here... McCain knows the skeletons to expose if people don’t fall in line behind him here and support him...... actually, the longer I live in AZ and the more I learn about McCain, the more I can’t stand the man and want to see him defeated...

McCain has outspent J.D. 12 to 1. J.D. should have insisted on a fundraising committment before he announced.

Very well said!
More, proving John McCain is many times more guilty of the things he (and his useful idiots) tries to pin on Hayworth and that Hayworth has been cleared of! It’s that old Clinton game we watched over and over...blame the innocent guy first, it’ll stick. J. D. wanted a civil campaign. McCain is only civil to democrats.

Do you have an air conditioner I know I don’t but trying to maintaining ones cool is a worht while effort.

Venting to feel better over another short comings is like cotton candy if fades quickly

But keeping an eye on the prize like winning the election has a much longer lasting effect!
