You are mistaken. Publishing classified information is illegal.
I'm not too sure about that. The SCOTUS decision in New York Times Co. v. United States suggests it's okay for now.

The SCOTUS ruled that the executive office had no burden of showing justification for the imposition of such a restraint (top secret.)

If any information in these reports can harm our troops then they should be hung.

Well, NYT was a prior restraint case, and to the extent that people think that the White House could have used the legal process to prevent the publication of the documents, they are delusional.

A different question is whether they can be prosecuted for the publication after it occurs. I still tend to think that the publication is First Amendment protected, but it’s a different question and fair to ask.
