First Rush, then Coulter, and Now Glenn Beck ... What’s Happening?

Commentary by John-Henry Westen

NEW YORK, August 12, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Appearing on The O’Reilly Factor yesterday, famed conservative Fox News host Glenn Beck may have shocked many Americans by noting that he was not very concerned about homosexual 'marriage.'

O’Reilly asked Beck, “Do you believe that gay marriage is a threat to the country in any way?” Beck replied, “No, I don't,” adding sarcastically, “Will the gays come and get us?”

After being pressed again on the question, Beck said, “I believe -- I believe what Thomas Jefferson said. If it neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket, what difference is it to me?”  Showing his own surprise, O’Reilly remarked, “Okay, so you don't. That's interesting. Because I don't think a lot of people understand that about you.”

The Glenn Beck revelation comes on the heels of two other startling announcements by conservative celebrity pundits in the last couple of weeks.  Earlier this week it was announced that conservative pundit Ann Coulter would headline a fundraiser for the homosexual activist group within the Republican Party, GOProud.  And on July 29, although his position had been revealed before, talk radio host Rush Limbaugh again came out in favor of homosexual civil unions, while being opposed to same-sex ‘marriage.’

To be fair, it must be pointed out that Beck said he was looking at the ‘big picture’ and promoting faith, the answer to all such things.  Moreover, he added that he was okay with gay ‘marriage’ with a caveat.  “As long as we are not going down the road of Canada, where it now is a problem for churches to have free speech. If they can still say, hey, we oppose it,” he said.

But even to have suggested, as strongly as he did, that he was not opposed to gay ‘marriage’ is detrimental and demonstrates a ‘small picture’ approach.

Beck seems like a good guy. He’s thoughtful.  He’s right on many matters in the culture war.  For instance, when O’Reilly followed up and asked if Beck thought abortion threatened the United States, Beck replied dramatically in the affirmative.  “Abortion is killing, it’s killing, you’re killing someone,” he said.

So I thought it’d be worth it to calmly and persuasively share concerns with Beck on his approach.  He may not read my email, but I’m sure if enough pro-family folks were to get the message to him, he’d reconsider his outlook.

Here’s Beck’s email:

And here’s the gist of what I wrote:

Laws teach people what is right and wrong and thus homosexual acts will implicitly be given the stamp of approval where such legal recognition is granted.  The young will be given the false impression that this behavior is safe and acceptable, or even good.

Society has a duty to legally recognize and support married couples since they are, through procreation, the source for the continuation of human life and thus society itself.  Homosexual couples cannot properly procreate and thus have no such claim to societal recognition.

The question is not so much about marriage, but about homosexual acts.  The acts are harmful to the individuals who engage in them. They are harmful physically, emotionally and spiritually.

With regard to persons engaged in such behavior or identifying with it, there must never be unjust discrimination.  All gay bashing, name-calling and the like should be condemned.  However, there must be discrimination on this front, a just discrimination, to preserve societal recognition for marriage between one man and one woman.

For an understanding of this, one must realize that this was already predicted:
3 Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come, unless the rebellion (ἀποστασία - apostasy) comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you this? 6 And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, and the Lord Jesus will slay him with the breath of his mouth and destroy him by his appearing and his coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one by the activity of Satan will be with all power and with pretended signs and wonders, 10 and with all wicked deception for those who are to perish, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore God sends upon them a strong delusion, to make them believe what is false, 12 so that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2Thessalonians (RSV) 2)

Pope St Pius X spoke of this general situation over 100 years ago:

…Did We doubt it We should have to regard you, unjustly, as either unconscious or heedless of that sacrilegious war which is now, almost everywhere, stirred up and fomented against God. For in truth, "The nations have raged and the peoples imagined vain things" (Ps 2,1.) against their Creator, so frequent is the cry of the enemies of God: "Depart from us" (Job 21,14). And as might be expected we find extinguished among the majority of men all respect for the Eternal God, and no regard paid in the manifestations of public and private life to the Supreme Will--nay, every effort and every artifice is used to destroy utterly the memory and the knowledge of God.

5 When all this is considered there is good reason to fear lest this great perversity may be as it were a foretaste, and perhaps the beginning of those evils which are reserved for the last days; and that there may be already in the world the "Son of Perdition" of whom the Apostle speaks (2Th 2,3). Such, in truth, is the audacity and the wrath employed everywhere in persecuting religion, in combating the dogmas of the faith, in brazen effort to uproot and destroy all relations between man and the Divinity! While, on the other hand, and this according to the same apostle is the distinguishing mark of Antichrist, man has with infinite temerity put himself in the place of God, raising himself above all that is called God; in such wise that although he cannot utterly extinguish in himself all knowledge of God, he has contemned God's majesty and, as it were, made of the universe a temple wherein he himself is to be adored. "He sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself as if he were God" (2Th 2,2).

6 Verily no one of sound mind can doubt the issue of this contest between man and the Most High. Man, abusing his liberty, can violate the right and the majesty of the Creator of the Universe; but the victory will ever be with God--nay, defeat is at hand at the moment when man, under the delusion of his triumph, rises up with most audacity. Of this we are assured in the holy books by God Himself. Unmindful, as it were, of His strength and greatness, He "overlooks the sins of men" (Sg 11,24), but swiftly, after these apparent retreats, "awaked like a mighty man that hath been surfeited with wine" (Ps 77,65), "He shall break the heads of his enemies" (Ps 67,22), that all may know "that God is the king of all the earth" (Ps 66,8), "that the Gentiles may know themselves to be men' (Ps 9,20)…

E Supremi (On the Restoration of All things in Christ) October 4, 1903

So none of this should come as a surprise. We will all be offered a choice: to follow God or to do what seems expedient within the society.

We should pray for those, like Beck, Coulter, and Limbaugh, who have decided that it is better to go with the world on this issue rather than to stand with God.

I flat out disagree that laws “teach us the difference between right and wrong”.

There have been many laws that have been wrong on their face.

I am not opposed to civil unions myself since I don't think it's the government's responsibility to make morality into law. However, I do object to turn white into black and black into white. Marriage has always meant between a man and a woman and we should allow all this nonsense because homosexuals feel entitled to change the definition of a word. My union with my wife is not the same as two men or two women together.

While I disagree with changing the definition of a word, I find it absolutely repulsive that Judge Walker finds it ok to make up stuff in the constitution. The way he uses the 14 amendment to justify his answer is completely stupid. Under is reasoning every law must apply to everyone equally. So in my opinion his answer just declared that everyone must get the same social benefits and be taxed exactly the same. No one person can be held in any sort of special status. If this ruling is allowed to stand the 14th will be allowed to be used to eliminate any sort of social law they choose.

I know they say it's crazy that this will lead to marrying a dog or other social obscurities as that. But with this ruling using the equal protection clause and abortion ruling using the right to privacy, I don't see how that combination of case law doesn't makes that an absolute certainty.

Civil unions ARE the government sticking it's nose in the business of churches.

"He has always focused on the legal aspects of the issue, that is just his mode."

I'll give you that point. Rush's father was a judge, and his brother is a lawyer. The Limbaugh family is well known in Missouri's legal circles for a long time. He learned from them.

My saying gay marriage is fake is also a legal argument that that can be clearly understood.

It’s the way they have used not equal protection and the right to privacy to create rights that makes your assumption correct. The case law if allowed to stand paves the way for love to create any sort of “legal” relationship someone wants to create.

Polygamy was practiced by all Christian religens at one time. It is based on the belief that you are “thy bothers keeper” . If a brother died, it was your duty to take in his wife and children and raise and protect as your own. Of course some people decided to make new rules and not follow the original intent. This is no different than the “new “ interperation of the 14 th Amendment that grants citizenship to children of illegals. It was never the intent to grant citizenship to illegal children , but politicans found a way around it. Just ignor it!!!

Now, to anticipate all the replies: America needs a Christian revival, or she will perish.

That is pretty much a given:

1 Kings 14:22-24 And Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they provoked him to jealousy with their sins which they had committed, above all that their fathers had done. For they also built them high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree. And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the Lord cast out before the children of Israel

So we see history repeating itself then, and we are following in those exact same footsteps today. What is puzzling is here we have Beck claiming we need a Revial, and then gives blessings to the Perverts who have historically raised God's Wrath not just against Israel, but against every nation that indulged Sodomites.

If Beck was saved and wasn't a Mormon, then he would have simply read a few paragraphs more:

1 Kings 15:11-12 And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, as did David his father. And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.

Q: What do you call a bus full of lawyers going over a cliff? A: "a good start". Likewise, Ada loaded up a lot of buses but it wasn't until his son Jehoshaphat where they finally purged them all out (22:46). Moral of the story: Perverts are like dandelions, it takes a lot of repeated work to finally evict them from the lawn, but once removed becomes the envy of the neighborhood.

So Jehoshaphat, except when aligning himself with his evil neighbor Israel, brought peace (defeating the powerful Edomites) and prosperity to Judah that continued on through his son Jehoram. During Jehoram's reign, he got mixed up with the Ahab/Jezebel bunch, sunk into deep idolatry and was later brutally killed by the reinvigoraed Edomites.

During this time, the dandelions came back and it wasn't until Josiah, who "did that which was right in the sight of the LORD" (2 Ki 22:2) and "brake down the houses of the Sodomites" (23:7) evil that was going on for at least seventy years. During this revival of Josiah, the Asyrian empire totally collapsed with the fall of Ninevah (612BC), freeing Judah from Asyrian vassalage.

This is sort of a wierd 8/28 connection here, but when King David impressed upon his son Solomon to build the temple AND to revere the Law, it was custom at that time to preserve highly important records and documents into the cornerstone of an important building - which the Temple was. Over the span of time from Jehoshaphat until Josiah, the Temple pretty much went into ruin, particularly through the profoundly wicked rule of Manasseh. So the high priest Hilkiah was encouraged to restore the Temple. As workers were digging through the place, they came upon the only surviving copy of the Pentateuch. This was later presented to Josiah who was shocked at how far away the people and government had strayed from their Founding Documents. This caused Josiah to seek a spiritual revival throught the land so that God would restore Judah. It is probably safe to say that the prophet Jeremiah and Josiah worked close together in this endeavor, yet it seems that the people weren't on board because it required royal orders to be issued to make this reformation come about.

Nevertheless, this attempt to restore Judah back into God's graces was insufficient to cover the Wrath that Judah managed to earn for itself over the three hundred years of idolatry and, as we read Nebuchadnezzar's troops wiped out Judah shortly after Josiah's death and successession by the worthless Jehoiakim, under whom perversion and idolatry were promptly restored.

The point to all of this is this: Sodomy will destroy your nation, it corrupts the people and is sufficient cause for the land to Vomit out its inhabitants.

I saw what Beck said and was concerned by it, although in context of the conversation with O'Reilly it seemed to be more in line as to why he was emphasizing fiscal matters over social ones.

And I know Rush has been reported as saying he is not opposed to civil unions, but when the rubber had to meet the road he was exploding about this moronic decision that overturned the will of the people in California.

A prophetic word from Abe Lincoln:

"At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide."

"Creeping socialism" is a symptom. Immorality is the disease. So forgive me if I ignore Doctor Beck's ultimately futile prescriptions.

“America needs a Christian revival”

Your response: “America need limited government revival and a return to self reliance.”

I leave it to the Founding Fathers to answer you, RFE Engineer.

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

John Adams

“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. A volume could not trace all their connections with private and public felicity. Let it simply be asked: Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths which are the instruments of investigation in courts of justice ? And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.

“It is substantially true that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. The rule, indeed, extends with more or less force to every species of free government. Who that is a sincere friend to it can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric?”

George Washington’s Farewell Address

Ezekiel 16:49-50

49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
50 And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

Jude 1:7

Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
