WikiLeaks Seeks Protection in Sweden
The Swedish Wire ^ | Sunday, August 15, 2010 | Johan Nylander

Julian Assange, founder of whistleblower website WikiLeaks, will apply for Swedish publishing licence. That would give the website protection under the Scandinavian country's whistleblower protection laws.

"We're dealing with organizations that don't obey the law. We're dealing with intelligence agencies," Julian Assange told news agency TT.

The WikiLeaks founder vowed Saturday to publish the last batch of secret documents on the Afghan war in "a couple of weeks", despite Pentagon pleas they would put further lives at risk.

The website’s server is located in Sweden and the organization passes information via Sweden to protect sources. Sweden has a strong tradition of freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Protection of journalistic sources in Sweden is very strong.

"Sweden is vital for our work. We have had long-term support from the Swedish people and the Swedish legal system. Our servers were initially based in the United States and moved to Sweden early on in 2007," he told the newswire.

"There's actually a small industry in Sweden; a new sort of refugee exists in the world, which is publishers. It is I think something for Swedes to be quite proud of: that they are facilitating a strong and free press," he said.

But as the website has no licence to publish material in Sweden, and therefore placing the server in Sweden does not give WikiLeaks automatic protection.

The stuff that was released stops at the end of 2008 for good reason. You are clueless if you think this is heroic.

Why can’t our CIA put a hit team on this guy like the leftist in Hollywood always show in the movies.

People like this guy need to learn it’s very dangerous putting the live of others at risk like he’s doing.

One would hope that life would become more challenging for Mr. Assange, however that is unlikely under the current regime.

If we can’t handle this little jerk, then why do we even have a CIA(and other less known groups)? Someone in one of those agencies needs to take it upon themselves to remove this troublesome person. Easier to ask for forgiveness later...than get approval.

You are being stupid and obtuse. Once the new stuff is released, it will show how corrupt and out of control the Obambi government is, that is what is happening.

If people don't know this by now they are incapable of knowing it. I would put the little weasel down without batting an eye. Dittos for the treasonous journalists in places like the NYT. It is not heroic. It is not freedom of speech. It is about the destruction of freedom and the enslavement of men. Courts be d@mned.

>You know the US govt would kill him with out arrest or trial if it could, what more do you need?

LOL! What are you? 12?

We would need far more than your movie & TV mentality on this.
How about some FACTS to back that up? No??

The US could kill him in 3.2 seconds if it was so inclined, but its pretty obvious that we are letting the legal system do its job - which will result in him being a guest of ours for about 20 years when he finally arrives here.

How do you try a man who lives in Sweden and post on line?

By international extradition treaty, thats how.
Its done on a regular basis & it has been done against internet law breakers.

Oh, spare me! This little weasel has no intention of making Obama look bad. He may want to make the Pentagon look bad but EVERY Dem president in recent memory claims the Pentagon and the State Dept. are out of their control so as to deny any responsibility for their failures.

BS!

It was treason when Daniel Ellsberg did it, and this is treason now.

I have a hard time seeing how any country would extradite someone for something that’s not a crime locally. What I mean is that publishing US secrets isn’t illegal in Sweden, just as publishing Swedish secrets isn’t illegal in the US.

Why even have the CIA or NSA if they can’t handle threats like this?

In a saner world, Assange’s actions would be recognized for what they are. An act of war and an act of terror. The man is part of an extra-govermental espionage organization. Once one realizes that, many possible, and under the circumstances, very ethical countermeasure become obvious.

I wonder what would happen if Wikileaks decided to publish secret documents leaked from China or Russia. Oh, that’s right, they won’t, because Assange would then be a dead man walking, rather than selectively ignoring impotent pleas from our Defense establishment.

Why does Assange think he can get protection in Sweden ~ it's more likely he'll be walking down a peaceful street at night and BANG. The Swedes will never catch the killer.

I won't shed any tears if that happens.

THAT'S RIGHT, YOU KOS KIDDIES, I WON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT IT. IN FACT, I'LL PROBABLY CELEBRATE!!!

Do you not understand the term “extradition?”
It applies exclusively to those cases, sir.

After all, if it was a crime, as you write, “locally,” then there would be no such thing as extradition at all.
