Pelosi Clarifies Call for Look at Funding of Anti-Mosque Critics (Still wants investigation)
The Washington Post ^ | Wednesday, August 18, 2010 | Greg Sargent

SNIP

It was a bit unclear what she was referring to, and now her office sends over a statement from her clarifying what she meant and sort of standing by what she said:

"The freedom of religion is a Constitutional right. Where a place of worship is located is a local decision.

"I support the statement made by the Interfaith Alliance that 'We agree with the ADL that there is a need for transparency about who is funding the effort to build this Islamic center. At the same time, we should also ask who is funding the attacks against the construction of the center.'

"For all of those expressing concern about the 9/11 families, we call upon them to join us in support of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act when Congress returns in September."

Greg Sargent is obfuscating for Pelosi. Here is her original comment as first reported at Free Republic last night. It's crystal clear what she was talking about:

"There is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded. How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we've been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City," hissed Pelosi.

When the Muzzies take over they will close Pelousi’s winery and pit her in a burqa. I wonder if she has ever thought of that.

More weasel words from the House Ferret. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that one of her many and varied interests has a hand, political or financial, in the effort to place “Cordoba House” (with its rich, Corinthian leather seats?) within the blast area of GZ.

It is amazing! Each time they open their pie holes it gets worse - keep it up, Dims! In the name of tolerance, flaunt the will of 60-70% of the American people and the victims’ families of 9-11, and see where it gets you in November.

I assume the clarification of Pelosi's call for investigation involves investigating everyone except Harry Reid and any other Rats that think the Mosque is inappropriate will be exempted from investigation. Right?

I''ll repeat in part what I said on a related thread:

There is no question about the legal right of a private owner to build on his or her own property whatever they desire, subject to local zoning and building regulations.

The issue here is the wisdom and decency of building a place of religious worship immediately adjacent to an infamous site which was destroyed at the cost of 3,000 souls by members of the same faith who claimed their actions in the name of that faith.

For a Speaker of the House to frame the issue as a political one - when those opposing the mosque have largely not done so - says more about the Speaker than it does about those opponents whom she suggests ought to be "investigated", as though the 1st Amendment and all other relevant portions of our Constitution had already been rendered moot by Sharia law.

Woo hoo!

Here's the lefty Interfaith Alliance press release Pelosi is referring to:

Interfaith Alliance Expresses Disappointment in ADL Statement on Islamic Center

Washington, DC – Interfaith Alliance President, Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy, expressed his disappointment today about a statement released by the Anti-Defamation League on the proposed Islamic Center in Lower Manhattan near the site of Ground Zero.

It was with a great deal of sorrow that I read the carefully constructed statement from the Anti-Defamation League on the proposed mosque in lower Manhattan. As an organization that for nearly 100 years has helped set the standard for fighting defamation and securing justice and fair treatment for all, it is disappointing to see the ADL arrived at this conclusion.

The Interfaith Alliance’s work is driven by the fundamental principle that protecting religious freedom is most critical in times of crisis. And those who claim to defend religious freedom can not turn their back on it when faced with controversy. It is unfair to prejudge the impact this center can have on reconciliation before it is even built. And we must remember that just because someone prays in a mosque, that does not make them any less of a citizen than you or me.

We agree with the ADL that there is a need for transparency about who is funding the effort to build this Islamic center. At the same time, we should also ask who is funding the attacks against the construction of the center.

We must never bow to bigotry within the US, just as we would never bow to tyranny from the outside.

# # #

The Interfaith Alliance celebrates religious freedom by championing individual rights, promoting policies that protect both religion and democracy, and uniting diverse voices to challenge extremism. Founded in 1994, the Interfaith Alliance has 185,000 members across the country from 75 faith traditions as well as those without a faith tradition. For more information visit www.interfaithalliance.org.

Not equivalent. It’s relevant to know who from overseas might be funding the victory mosque. Who is funding free speech in the United States is none of her business.
