"The freedom of religion is a Constitutional right. Where a place of worship is located is a local decision.

"I support the statement made by the Interfaith Alliance that 'We agree with the ADL that there is a need for transparency about who is funding the effort to build this Islamic center. At the same time, we should also ask who is funding the attacks against the construction of the center.'

"For all of those expressing concern about the 9/11 families, we call upon them to join us in support of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act when Congress returns in September."

I would think the plain meaning of the statute makes it applicable to individuals in the exercise of their religious faith, and not to a decision as to where a place of worship is to be located. Similarly, behavioral constraints imposed upon individuals engaged in religious expression are subject to a test, including one of "licentiousness". While that might prohibit certain acts undertaken while a person is engaged in religious expression, it would not seem to pertain to the decision of a faith-based group as to where to locate a place of worship for the benefit of its members.

Once again, I think the issue here is one of decency and respect, and not one of fundamental liberty. The fact that the building of a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero might reasonably be seen as a provocation, or even that evidence suggests it is intended as such, does not by itself suffice to encroach upon property rights.

It is up to the relevant authorities in New York City to approve or deny a building permit. In this case, given the unique circumstances and apparent intentions of the developers, it ought to have been swiftly denied. That it was not might speak more about the Western capacity for self-delusion than about the intentionality of our adversaries.

That's pretty rich considering the real attack that happened on 9/11/2001.

Hey, Pelosi ... I want an investigation into the payment by the State Dept for this Imam to make fund-raising trips for this (or any) mosque, A CLEAR VIOLATION OF THE ESTABLISHMENT CLAUSE. Where are the Separation people on this one? What about the money we're spending on restoration projects around the globe? Same problem.

Imagine if the gubermint was paying some preacher's travel bill to go and gin up support for a Christian Education Center. You could line up the amicus briefs in support of the injunction from here to the moon.
