(CNN) -- Screen legend Tony Curtis died Thursday, his family said. He was 85.
"My father leaves behind a legacy of great performances in movies and in his paintings and assemblages," actress Jamie Lee Curtis said in a statement. "He leaves behind children and their families who loved him and respected him and a wife and in-laws who were devoted to him. He also leaves behind fans all over the world. He will be greatly missed."
Curtis starred in more than 140 major motion pictures and was nominated as for an Oscar for his performance in 1958's "The Defiant Ones" with Sidney Poitier, according to his official website.

I was in Washington, D.C. several years ago, doing some research at the National Archives. I took a lunch break and went across the street to get a slice of pizza. While I was there, I heard that Tony Curtis was outside, and that there was going to be a ceremony at the Navy Memorial right outside the building. I finished my meal and ran back to my car to get my camera. From what I understand, Mr. Curtis was going to be the Grand Marshal for the Memorial Day celebration that year. There was a short program at which he spoke, along with a few other military officials. If I recall correctly, he was in the Navy during WWII, and was on board the USS Missouri when the Japanese surrendered.
Amazing how many of the actors of that generation served.

A week ago, I was visiting my elderly mother and she said "Did you hear Tony Curtis died?" I had to correct her and tell her it was Eddie Fisher. Creepy, eh?
