Dumb question alert!

Remember the volcano that disrupted air traffic months ago? (sorry I don’t remember where it was) There were fears of it’s sister volcano blowing at that time.

Is this anywhere near?

Thanks!

There is another Icelandic volcano who's glacier has sprung a leak indicating a possible eruption soon.

That was in Iceland. It is part of the Transatlantic Rift system. Quite literally those fissure volcanoes are where the earth is being pulled apart. Usually that happens under the Atlantic ocean where we aren’t able to see it. Iceland rises above the water, so we can see them clearly.

Iceland and Indonesia are quite far apart. The former is the part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that peeks out above sea level and the latter sits atop the Ring of Fire. Two unrelated geologic systems.

Not a dumb question, and although not close, they are distant cousins. The subduction of oceanic crustal plates beneath continental crustal plates is the driving force which creates these volcanoes. The one in Alaska may be on the other side of the Pacific, but they are distant relatives. For more information on plate tectonics, island arc volcanoes, and seafloor spreading, look here: JMU Fichter.

The one you are asking about to watch for in Iceland is named Katla. If you hear about Katla rumbling, take notice. Like this Indonesian one, if Katla blows, it will be hugh and series for the entire world.

And there's not a damn thing we can do about it.....

That’s a nice little volcano site.

The volcano that might be doing something soon - or not - in Iceland is not Katla but Grimsvotn. He has links that tell history and so on. Grimsvotn erupted in the late 18th century and cause much death due to toxic fumes that even killed people, animals and crops in England. It is not a nice volcano.

Wednesday 3rd November 2010
Grimsvotn Volcano, Iceland
Melt water continue to flow from Grimsvotn volcano, Iceland. The rate has slowed compared to previous days. An increased in electrical conductivity in the Súla river indicates that geothermal water is draining from the western side of the Skeiðarárjökull glacier. Earthquakes continue to occur under Grimsvötn volcano indicating that floodwaters flow under the glacier. There is no indication the volcano is currently erupting.
