Rare Earth Elements in US Not So Rare, Report Finds
Scince Daily ^ | November 17, 2010

Approximately 13 million metric tons of rare earth elements (REE) exist within known deposits in the United States, according to the first-ever nationwide estimate of these elements by the U.S. Geological Survey.

This estimate of domestic rare earth deposits is part of a larger report that includes a review of global sources for REE, information on known deposits that might provide domestic sources of REE in the future, and geologic information crucial for studies of the availability of REE to U.S. industry.

How long before environmentalists move to lock it down?

Well I'm sure those environmentalists don't care that so little platinum is used in catalytic converters. It's used for that and jewelery. Other than that, I don't think it's worth much as a precious metal.

Though there are other metals that are... precious...

Good to hear. Like you said- Will the ecoterrorists let us tap those resources? I’m sure there is some kind of rare toad or slug that would be threatened with extinction.

Other than that, I don't think it's worth much as a precious metal.

Au contraire! It is used widely in the electronics industry and medical industry!

Precision temperatures sensors, known as RTD's are made of platinum. Platinum is used in the production of hard disk drive coatings! You and your computer depend on platinum!..................

From Wiki:

Platinum is used in catalytic converters, laboratory equipment, electrical contacts and electrodes, platinum resistance thermometers, dentistry equipment, and jewelry. Because only a few hundred tonnes are produced annually, it is a scarce material, and is highly valuable and is a major precious metal commodity. Being a heavy metal, it leads to health issues upon exposure to its salts, but due to its corrosion resistance it is not toxic as a metal. Some of its compounds, most notably Cisplatin, are applied in chemotherapy against certain types of cancer.
