It’s a terribly handsome plane. Too bad they can’t swap out engines, electronics, and avionics on existing or built-new F-14s.

Wonder when they’ll remake “Top Gun” with F-22s?

The engine nozzles, plus the single TCS mount in the nose (as opposed to the dual TSC/IRST mount in the F-14D) give this particular Tomcat away as an F-14B, rather than an “A” (although it might have been one of the initial upgrades under the F-14A+ program).

A remake of “Top Gun” today, or in the near future, would be done with either the F-18 or possibly F-35. No?

Or C-2As, with Maverick now in the twilight of his career and relegated to flying rubber dog sh*t out of Hong Kong.

I read somewhere that a remake is planned and Cruise is going to play an TG instructor.

It just looks wicked. Don’t know if it’s the variable wings, or the twin engines, or just the fact that it’s a (comparitively) large fighter, but the Tomcat looks like it can get the job done.

I remember reading about fighter planes way back when I was in high school… this and the F-15 impressed me most. They were considering anti-satellite missiles at the time, and the F-15 was the only platform that could fly straight up, full vertical, for long enough to lock onto the target and fire the missile (so said the book, anyway). And, of course, the F-14. Tremendous speed, carrier based, the Phoenix missile, and it’s amazing radar capability. What a plane!

Definitely miss these babies.

Oh my. What a beautiful bird. Even with the blurry screen, small smile...

I see you your video, and raise you mine ; }

This one is missing my favorite Dependants Cruise sonic pass, (Don’t Blink!!) but the shot at 45 seconds and 50 seconds ALMOST make up for it.

The B was called the A+ before they decided to call it the B. Probably the hardest model to land on the boat due to really peppy motors and a bad HUD. The D model had the same motors, but an advanced HUD with a good velocity vector and a Power Carrot that gave you trend information. In the end game they started putting better HUDs in those aircraft.

Personally, I would have put the digital radar in all the aircraft and left the old Pratt motors in the rest of the jets. It would have cost half as much and we could have done the whole fleet. The compressor stall/spin issue in the A was almost matched by the AB burn through explosion issues in the GE engine.

F-22=AirForce and F-14=Navy. Thank you for the correction.

If a “Top Gun” remake in name or spirit MUST involve the Navy, then yes.

I’m anxiously awaiting the day I can watch an airshow featuring the USAF Thunderbirds in their F-22s.

I feel the need, the need, for ... er, enough capacity to lift Val Kilmer into the air?

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

Agree it’s “handsome”..I think it’s because the fuselage has curves, arc..which today are NOT stealthy, and therefore we don’t see anymore..but the Tomcat’s shape appeals to us visually, aesthetically..

While I was in basic Naval Flight Officer training, many different aircraft came to Sherman Field so we students could decide to which community we wanted to go. I remember being surprised at how big the F-14 was, especially for a two-man crew.
