Swiss voters have backed a referendum proposal for the automatic expulsion of non-Swiss citizens for certain crimes.
Around 53% agreed that those convicted of crimes ranging from murder to benefit fraud should be deported.
Fabrice Moscheni, of the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP), which drew up the measure, said "people we welcome in Switzerland should respect the rules of this country".
But opponents said it was another example of increasing xenophobia.
The SVP was behind last year's referendum that imposed a ban on the building of Islamic minarets. That decision was condemned by human rights groups and foreign governments.
The SVP says immigrants to Switzerland are disproportionately responsible for crime. It points to the fact that more than 60% of prison inmates do not have Swiss nationality.

“We’ll take ‘em!” - Barry HO
It would be interesting to take a vote on this here in the US. I bet more than 50% would vote for expulsion.
What? The citizens are not on-board with the politicians who would flood the country with non-assimilating, troublemaker, immigrant riff raff?
So do American voters. Too bad our gov’t doesn’t feel the same.
Anyone who uses the term “xenophobic” to describe people who are tired of being abused by non-natives...is themselves a racist.
Good for the Swiss to stand up to the Third World scum who trash their nation and refuse to respect Swiss culture and laws. This referendum will not be liked by Liberals and Free Trade Open Borders Globalists....but the Swiss stepped up
Need to do this in America
I think it would pass unanimously.
We have even stricter laws and have for many years. Conviction of any crime involving moral turpitude will result for a non-citizen in deportation as well as conviction of any crime for which the alien may (not necessarily will) be sentenced to one year or more in jail.
The fact that ANYONE voted against this measure COMPLETELY discredits the notion of the Swiss’ superior intellect as compared to their Yankee allies....
The disturbing thing about this is that only 53% of people voted for this. In a healthy country 93% of people would vote for this law.
