School superintendents across the state were reminded by the ACLU this week that holiday celebrations focusing primarily on one religious holiday amount to an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) letter, addressed to 137 public shool leaders across the state, stated that it was responding to a number of complaints from families about school party activites this Christmas season.
Hedy Weinburg, ACLU executive director in Tennessee, cited several U.S. Supreme Court decisions about the matter.
But several area citizens, like Jim Brown, think that such admonitions are misguided and potentially dangerous. Brown commented on the news, saying "We are a Christian nation. Let's act like it." and said that he hopes that the teachers and administration will celebrate the Christmas season.
Said one area teacher (name withheld), "I respect people of different faiths, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to eliminate my own from my work and and my classroom. I can enjoy Christmas as Christmas without worrying that I'm going to offend someone. My money still says that I trust in God. Are they going to stop me from using that, too?"
The letter was sent from the ACLU to the top administrators across the state. What those administrators do with the information is yet to be seen.
Surely she was raised as, and identifies as Presbyterian.
I received an email around Thanksgiving urging people to do just that, send the ALCU’s national headquarters a religious Christmas card.

That would be in the name of freedom of speech, right?
Chanuka is over so there is only one other holiday left this month.
Another target for Federal budget elimination.
I work for an employer that is happy for me to say “Merry Christmas” to our customers and prospects. The people to whom I saw Merry Christmas are really nicely surprised by my greeting and return it with enthusiasm and a smile.
Unless and until they change the name of the LEGAL HOLIDAY they shouldn’t have a legal leg to stand on, should they?
AHA! So not only the NEA but the ACLU is running government schools! Unless public schools are managed by the local boards, there is no hope for the future. On the other hand, Oregon has just made it possible for “religious” clothing to be worn by pupils. This must be good news for the burka crowd.
ACLU on Ramadan and EID? If that was celebrated I bet you wouldn’t hear a peep out of them. How about Kwanzaa?
"Surely she was raised as, and identifies as Presbyterian."
I am Jewish, and every single time I see some JINO speak for the ACLU it makes me cringe.
I have been the recipient of many a "Merry Christmas!" over the years and continuing to literally today, and it never bothered me. To me, it is just someone trying to be friendly and say some kind words to me, and my response is usually something along the lines of, "And the same to you and your family."
We have a diverse culture, but Christians have always been and continue to be the vast majority. I have absolutely zero problem with that, only those very few individuals (Christian or otherwise) who insult me because of my heritage - and I'm not so stupid and/or thin-skinned to attribute their actions and words to others of a similar religious or ethnic background - they are responsible for themselves.
Ironic that the ACLU is warning people NOT to exercise their right to free speech. The world is truly going nuts.
ACLU seems to get in a lather over Christmas every December.
It’s the Anti-Christian Lawyer’s Union.
Just what is it about Christmas that seems to bother them?
MERRY CHRISTMAS ACLU! The more you tell us we can’t, the MORE I SAY IT EVERTWHERE I GO!!! Maybe you can silence some, but you’ll NEVER silence me.

Roses are reddish
Violets are blueish
If it weren’t for Christmas
We’d all be Jewish
That has been done several times..The ACLU says all they do is laugh and throw them in the trash..I read that last year and the year before.
The bastards do run this nation and it is time we kick their rears out of the country.
