Police say teen killed man in self defense

ROY -- Roy police are saying the man involved in a domestic violence situation with his girlfriend Thursday was killed by the girlfriend's niece. They say it was an act of self defense.

The boyfriend and girlfriend, both in their 30s, were living together but recently separated. Police say it sounds like the boyfriend wasn't happy about it.

John Sharp That boyfriend, John Sharp, went to his girlfriend's house three times Thursday. All three times, police were called. It was after the third time that he was shot and killed.

The first time was at 4 a.m. Sharp wanted to talk to his girlfriend, Mellony Pursel, but she didn't want to. She asked him to leave and when he didn't, police were called.

He returned five hours later and began to damage items inside the house. Once again, police were called. That time, Sharp was arrested and taken to jail.

However, after he bailed out, he went to his family's house then back to Pursel's house where he forced his way in and began choking her.

Pursel's 17-year-old niece, who lived in the house, got a gun and yelled at Sharp to stop choking Purcel. When Sharp then rushed toward her, the teen shot him twice, killing him.

Police say it was self defense.

Roy Police Chief Greg Whinham said, "It's an indication they were warding off an attack by a person who they already feared, who had a no contact order, who had already been taken to jail earlier in the day because of his violent behavior."

Police say Sharp has no prior record of domestic violence. We also talked to some people who knew them and say this was a complete surprise.

I take it the girlfriend was paying the rent? Or was it the taxpayers?

Hmm least they were able to defend themselves. Here I would have to use a broom or depend on the dogs. At least the niece wasn't afraid to use the gun.

I have a feeling Hollywood shapes a lot of notions about guns and their use. He probably thought that she would chicken out like they do in the movies...

Double tap center mass - that’s the way to do it, young lady.

ALL of Hollywood is such s***. I remember going into the video store. I am done with their crap.

The majority of movie boxes had a person on it holding a gun. The libs in Hollywood want to disarm you but they use guns to sell almost every movie. If there is no gun on the box it is T/A’s.

Whatta police department, they get two tries and can't control this thug. It takes a 17 year old girl to do it for 'em.

Good shootin' sweetheart, don't forget to clean your gun, it'll still be there when the cops are a lifetime away.

Well, hopefully he’ll be given a lenient sentence with nor prior record, and being otherwise a nice young man. Based on other crimes of this type he should be able to get a two-year sentence, and out in one-year if he behaves himself.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Not only did the 17-year old gal prevent a rape or worse of her aunt, but also prevented a rape of our justice system.

Whatta police department...

IIRC This may be the same police dept. where the police chief accidentally shot himself while teaching a gun safety class a few years ago. Don't quote me on that, though.

From another source:
Police say the girl fired two shots as the 37-year-old Sharp tried to attack her. One bullet hit Sharp in the chest and another hit the aunt in the arm.

Anyone who comes to the aid of another person can find himself in this situation... The attacker charges straight at you, thereby putting his original victim in the line of fire, in the background. What do you do? Just asking.

I think the young lady did the right thing, but don't know for certain; she also definitely put her aunt in danger of being shot as soon as she opened fire. I'd think the girl could've moved sideways as he charged or gotten down low to the ground to increase the angle between her aunt and the attacker... But in that case she'd be a shooter who was in motion and more likely to miss her shot... So I just don't know... Just asking.

Anyhow... All's well that ends well.

Good thing she got that No Contact Order from the courts.

Good thing the police took him to jail.

Let’s face the facts the police and the courts are designed to punish after the fact and are of very limited use to prevent crimes from happening.

We are all essentially on our own; we have to be able to defend our selves because when second count the police are only minutes away.

The police were on their way the third time that day when the boyfriend was shot. You can not depend on the police when your life is in danger. If you do chances are you will die.

What was the biggest danger to the aunt, the niece shooting the perp dead or letting the perp kill the niece and the Aunt? The niece did the right thing. As far as her “moving to the side or dropping down”, you obviously have no idea how fast these things move. The perp was just feet away from her and she had no time to think of such things, she just acted, and in the correct manner. As for hitting her Aunt, she probably needs more range time under pressure to improve her shooting skills.

Nobody does, but likely you are right.

A likely fatal attack was in progress, so acquiring and preparing superior force (the weapon) was reasonable. The attack was continued so force to terminate the attack and prevent the attacker from acquiring the weapon was also reasonable.

Likely the young lady fired from the best position available, in a manner most likely to hit her target (standing still), and discontinued fire prudently.

All in all, very good decisions under extreme pressure.
