From the article:

In California more than 12 inches of rain has fallen in parts of the Santa Monica Mountains in the south and 13 feet of snow has accumulated at Mammoth Mountain.

Actually more than 15 1/2 feet of snow at Mammoth Mountain with over 9 feet in the town, a ski resort. With that said, I don't think the Summer snow in Australia is that unusual, the High Sierra of California of California gets some snow in July almost every year, I have seen it quite a few times, but the national and world news has never reported on it.

Actually it IS very unusual to have snow at this time in Australia. Unlike the high Sierras, Australia’s mountains are old and worn, no higher than the Appalachians.
