A 7.2 in a region of structures with little or no reinforcement is more like a 9 in a developed area with earthquake damage mitigation in place.
This may well have leveled the structures in the area.

My first thought when I heard this was I hoping it was not really an earthquake, but man made ground movement from a couple BIG bunker busters... then I woke up and remembered who our current president is.
