WikiLeaks cables: US agrees to tell Russia Britain's nuclear secrets
The Telegraph ^ | 9:25PM GMT 04 Feb 2011 | Matthew Moore, Gordon Rayner and Christopher Hope

The US secretly agreed to give the Russians sensitive information on Britain’s nuclear deterrent to persuade them to sign a key treaty, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week.

Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.

Diplomacy works because there are proper sets of behavior and rules. Most of those rules deal with concepts of discretion and cover.

There is an old saying in diplomatic circles: Never write what you can say, never say what you can nod, never nod what you can wink.

None of the info that has been released is significantly damaging or surprising to anyone at high levels in any country. But the revealing of diplomatic communication strips away discretion and cover from the U.S. Diplomatic Corps. Without those concepts firmly in place, we are weakened in both diplomatic and espionage realms.

Wikileaks will eventually be seen as the most devastating incident of espionage ever against the U.S. It will be decades before the entire impact to our diplomatic and espionage corps can be determined.

Wait, if you think WikiLeaks committed espionage for revealing this, what would you call the administration’s activities revealed in the Wikileaks?!?!

Tho I have very mixed emotions about WikiLeaks, someone has got to shine a light in the cockroach nest....our administration betrayed what was historicaly our closest ally.

If the media and most of the pols in Washington won’t shine the light, then someone has to.

The information is not important. The Russians had that info anyway, we knew that, the Brits knew that, and the Russians know we knew that.

The handling of the information is where the leverage was.

But Wikileaks did more than just give away information. It stripped our Diplomatic Corps of “discretion” and “cover”, tools that are essential for our success. Without trust that information will be held with discretion and that cover will be provided to the informants, we lose a lot of power and influence around the world.

While some people see the “Obama Train” being stopped by Wikileaks, I see the “U.S. Diplomatic Train Tracks” being ripped up. The train is easily replacable, the tracks will take a long time to replace.

also from UK

The Obama Administration betrays Britain to appease the Russians over New START

The matter is serious enough to merit Congressional hearings in Washington as well as parliamentary hearings in London.

It is easy to see why the Obama team refused to allow the US Senate access to the negotiating documents for New START, as they would have sparked outrage on both sides of the Atlantic that would almost certainly have killed the Treaty.

The Telegraph report clearly contradicts repeated claims by the Obama negotiating team that no side deals were struck with their Russian counterparts.

You say the information is not important? Well, others seem to think t is a pretty big deal and I did not read that this was info the Russians had...doesnt make sense that they would want it if they already had it?

The the article tells different tale: Washington lobbied London in 2009 for permission to supply Moscow with detailed data about the performance of UK missiles. The UK refused, but the US agreed to hand over the serial numbers of Trident missiles it transfers to Britain.

Professor Malcolm Chalmers said: “This appears to be significant because while the UK has announced how many missiles it possesses, there has been no way for the Russians to verify this. Over time, the unique identifiers will provide them with another data point to gauge the size of the British arsenal.”

Duncan Lennox, editor of Jane’s Strategic Weapons Systems, said: “They want to find out whether Britain has more missiles than we say we have, and having the unique identifiers might help them.”

While the US and Russia have long permitted inspections of each other’s nuclear weapons, Britain has sought to maintain some secrecy to compensate for the relatively small size of its arsenal.

William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, last year disclosed that “up to 160” warheads are operational at any one time, but did not confirm the number of missiles.

Sorry, tho I am not a fan of WikiLeaks, to accuse WikiLeaks of espionage and then say the information we brokered to Russians is not important makes no sense to me and seems to give the administration a pass they don’t deserve.

To be technical, Espionage is done on behalf of a foreign government, say what you may but Julian so far as I can tell is NOT in the employ of any government. So, while his actions may have been damaging, they aren’t [currently*] ‘espionage.’

*I say currently because he may, in fact, be under the employ of another government; but that has to be proven rather than merely assumed.

However, this is bad form even if it were just an idea that the Administration presented to the Russkies”

Oh, this sounds more than just an idea. What we don’t know is what kind of a deal we made with the Brits to still help protect some of the secrecy they want to maintain.

As far as Wikileaks is concerned, I believe they’re basically anarchists who want to bring down all the gov’ts in the world. The msm worldwide is aiding and abbetting by further publicizing this stuff.

Our diplomatic corps has been a nest of treason for a very long time. It is the HOME of anti-American thought in our government.

They have severely abused the right to get to use “discretion” and “cover”. They routinely use that “discretion and cover” to hide their activities working against us,, from us. They are unfaithful to our nation and need their wings clipped.

And furthermore,, it’s time for them to become honest. If you are truly advancing the American way, the post WWII treachery that has become the hallmark of our diplomats, has no place.
They need to say, “this position “X” is the American agenda”,, and we deal openly and honestly with all. If other nations will only deal with us in the dark,, then they are not worthy. The European way is secret deal behind hidden treaty. European BS has damaged the character of this nation deeply and it is time we move away from their corrupt ways.

It is unworthy of this great nation. Our policy of BS in dark alleys lets the slimy nations pick the game. And thats no small thing,,, our nation has suffered GREATLY by constantly letting so-called friends pretend to oppose us for their own reasons.

It has created an atmosphere where it’s practically STYLISH to bash the USA. Time for them to truly stand and be counted.

Agreed. However, I do think that they were so eager to release the information they had that they released information that may actually spwan events contrary to their aims.
