I'm skeptical, too - but two things give me pause. One, I'm not sure how the network of sensors feeds in from that area of the world - I went to one of the Egypt scientific web sites, and in at least one zone, they still sneaker-net data on floppy from one area to another.
Also, here is at least
one other source of news discussing an earthquake in that area. I find it interesting because even though the timeframe is the same, the reported magnitude is much smaller - and it is from an Egyptian site that attaches no religious significance to the event.

Checking your link there was a 5.1 at the Gulf of Aden on the 20th. Perhaps that is it.
