Latest news from Japan:
From the BBC-
1456: Tepco says it may start pouring water from a helicopter over Fukushima Daiichi's reactor four in the next few days, to cool the spent-fuel pool.
1439: A 30km (18 mile) no-fly zone is in place around Fukushima, says the IAEA.
1436: The IAEA says Monday's blast at Fukushima may have affected the integrity of the containment vessel - there are fears of more serious radioactive leaks if happen.
1435: Following earlier reports, it appears there has been more than one strong aftershock in Japan - AP reports two tremors measuring over 6.0 within three minutes of each other.
Twitter-
-US Geological Survey counts 451 aftershocks since the initial earthquake struck Japan Friday. 238 of them registered magnitude 5.0 or more.
-Despite situations in Japan & Libya, spksmn Jay Carney says Pres Obama's 5-day trip to Brazil, Chile & El Salvador starting Fri night is on.
-FLASH: More U.S. military personnel in Japan testing positive for low-levels of radiation, relief missions to continue - Navy 18 minutes ago via web
USGS still not reporting ... maybe they got tired after the first 200+ aftershocks.
I couldn’t figure out why he kept saying Monday. I thought he was talking about the current quake
Oh my!
Just heard on TV news that Japanese officials think #3 has a containment breach, and that #3 is where the spike is coming from..........I sure hope not, as #3 is the unit that uses MOX fuel (plutonium is part of fuel mix)............if it is #3, then millisieverts in the hundreds is very possible.........
And the benefit of blowing the facility to hell launching massive amounts of pulverized radioactive particles and irradiated material into the air would be?
:)
USGS just confirmed the 6 off east coast of Chiba - so about 15 minutes to get it out looks like.
Broadcast showing hard snow in Sendai area where tsunami hit - LARGE flakes coming down hard.
Man, can’t they put robots into some of those places, those little tracked ones, so they can at least get an idea of what’s happening inside. Didn’t they do that at Chernobyl?
Chiba is on the other side of the bay from Tokyo. About an hour by rail so fairly nearby.
How exactly would a tactical nuke end this situation. Given the surrounding area is already destroyed.
hmm - might be an NHK feed out there, but that comes out of New York typically so it’ll be time delayed. I usually do what the wife tells me ... worked 16 years so far ... so straight Japanese. Let me check around a bit - I’ll post if I find anything.
I believe the request would be for the US military help in dropping water (and boron) onto the reactors from helicoptors to cool it and suppress the radiation.
So, the BEST CASE is that they hope the thing will just burn into the ground? I'd be amazed if that were the case.
I'd be amazed too, but, for a time it appeared to be true? Now I'm reading that they just drew back for 45 minutes and there are personnel who have returned? (How many? All 50? Nobody knows.) This is the most clueless I've felt since the tsunami hit and there was no live news coverage. It's weird to know that something like this is going on and CNN and FOX both have re-runs on.
Fukushima: Mark 1 Nuclear Reactor Design Caused GE Scientist To Quit In Protest
Thanks in advance.
Numerous sources have workers returning to plant after radiation levels subside.
Yep, the quake was on the other side of the peninsula from the city and out to sea a bit. Are you in Tokyo now, bgill?
Is there anybody else but me that thinks it odd that the Japanese need to state this in the news.
Diplomatically you ask a country in private then announce what a country is willing to do to help you. If you ask for help in the news from other countries then you do it in a broad statement for help from all countries and see what you get....but to ask for help from America in the news seems to me to mean they need to shame this administration into helping them....
I would love to know what is really going on behind the scenes that the Japanese felt a need to ask for help in the news from us and not just picked up a phone.
Welp - Love to stay and keep chatting folks, but I gotta get up and go to work in the mornin’ and it’s already past my bed time.
Best to all and prayers up for those in need.
