Geologist: Alarming magnetic field changes signal major quake for West Coast

A former United States Geological Survey scientist says a major quake on the West Coast is imminent.

Jim Berkland predicts earthquakes…accurately.

Never heard of him? Perhaps you should—especially if you live on or near the West Coast of the United States, or know someone that does.

Anyone with an average 80 percent success rate predicting earthquakes should command attention, and lately Berkland has been in the limelight of the national media.

"The people that say you cannot predict earthquakes, they don't know what they are talking about," Berkland told the Santa Cruz Sentinel during a 2009 interview.

Appearing on late night radio shows for many years, since the great quake and tsunami that struck northeastern Japan the retired geologist has been finding his booking calendar full. His unpronounceable and difficult-to-spell website, syzygyjob.com, has crashed several times after his latest appearances on FOXNews with Neil Cavuto and the popular talk radio host Michael Savage's show.

While Berkland has scored many direct hits with earthquake predictions—they fall within his self-described "seismec window"—his greatest claim to fame was his accurate prediction of the powerful 1989 temblor that rocked San Fransisco four days before it occurred.

Now the earthquake prognosticator admits he's worried about the prospects of a strong quake hitting the West Coast of the US sometime during March 2011, particularly around March 19th.

The "ring of fire" that encircles the Pacific rim includes the region from Alaska south to South America. During the past several years earthquake and volcanic activity has been on the upswing all along the rim except on the northeastern perimeter.

Thank You. I appreciate your response. I thought it might be my perception. But it helps to have confirmation. Thank You.

How do we prepare for an earthquake? Which may or may not occur?

Tremors are one thing, earthquakes another.

Get right with God. Stay prayed up and be good.

A wise thing to do anytime.

You’re right about getting right with God. I’m not as good as I should be but sometimes I think there are angels looking out for me, as I should have died many times. You can’t always think devine intervention will rescue you. You have to help yourself, and that can be through preparation.

If a big earthquake hits, I’m pretty sure my home will survive intact, unless there is a large fire in the neighborhood. I have barrels of water in my tool sheds. A tent, propane stoves, lots of food and bottled water, a generator and gasoline, lots of batteries and flashlights, and tools and wood to repair damage. Also good neighbors and plenty of ammunition if things get dicey with strangers.

“...AFTER the quake the next morning.”

By chance around 8 am? About when the Tsunami hit our shores?

OK, just got back from Chicago. Sorry for not posting this correctly, I’m a n00b it seems. :)

I live 30 minutes from the Pacific in Grays Harbor. The harbor is is about 90 feet below me. I have a house that was built in 1915, by the Weatherwax family. Old lumber barons in the day. All 3”x11” rough cut Cedar floor joists, study framing, 1/2” tongue and groove Cedar siding with 3/4” lath and plaster walls.

I have the sill plates bolted down to the foundation. She is a beauty with four levels, basement, 1st & 2nd floors, and a finished attic.

Wish me luck if it hits this weekend. I’m one block from bedrock also. At elevation 92’, I hope the tsunami misses me.

Here’s a very simple but detailed website on the NW subduction zone. Gray’s Harbor produced some of the evidence of past large earthquakes. It WILL happen again.

Your house is probably up high enough as I believe that 60 feet is about the highest a tsunami can get - but the harbor may change that (greater or smaller I don’t know). I think the tsunami would reach your place in 15 minutes or so. Damage to your home - hard to tell. You’re getting pretty close, but you should survive I think (although odds are you will be dead and gone of old age!) - unless you are on unstable landslide material. Oh - local landslides going into the ocean can create a much larger “tsunami” (I think they are called something else). A landslide in Alaska hit an inlet and I think the wave was 200 feet or something crazy!

The last NW subduction zone EQ occured between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM, local time, on January 26th 1700. This quake, with magnitude estimated at 9.0, rocked the region with strong shaking for several long minutes while coastal Washington plummeted as much as 1.5 meters relative to coastal waters.

How is it possible to know that any event on the Cascadia Subduction ever occurred, let alone to place it within one hour of its occurrence 300 years ago? (Lewis & Clark explored here in 1804!). Let the evidence speak for itself and discover an ancient earthquake in the Pacific Northwest.

http://www.pnsn.org/HAZARDS/CASCADIA/land_levels.html

snip:

Multiple cycles of fresh-water peaty horizons, overlain by tsunami and marine deposits, are found in coastal lowland soils of Washington and Oregon, Brian Atwater, of the USGS, has studied and dated these layers at many places along our coasts. He finds evidence for seven cycles of sudden submergence during the last 3,500 years - an average of 500 years between events, with the most recent horizon dated by Carbon 14 to between 320 and 410 years ago.

Interesting. The force of stormy ocean waves affects sensitive instruments hundreds of miles inland. Although not sure how it would work, I think the possibility that your cat noticed something different might not be too far fetched, depending on how close to the west coast you live. (Cleveland? Forget it!)

I have had clients that seem a bit crazy when they want vibrations measured in their homes. The place seems fine to me, but they can’t stand it because of all the vibrations. (”Do you feel it now - its MUCH worse!”) It is only until I put out some instruments to monitor things long term, and have them make a diary of when things seem worse (date, time, etc.) that they don’t start to seem crazy anymore. “Sensitives” they are called.

Opps - I remembered wrong - not 60 feet, but 90 feet is a common maximum for large quakes. (upside-down dyslexia??)

As with anytime near the coast, if you feel a quake, get to high ground (or tall building) as fast as you can. Do NOT wait for an announcement, sirens, etc. Just assume that it was the big one off shore. Living in Gray’s Harbor I imagine you know all of that though.)

If it were me, even at 92 feet, I would turn off the gas coming into the house and take a walk up the hill with my family.

those that did not prepare who see you doing okay will think about taking it away from you if they have any knowledge of your supplies. This is impossible to defend against unless you have a hidden cave and a buried stash. or unless you have a fort like house position. There is a thread here on free republic about how to prepare and bury stores that others do not know about, etc., forget the link name ... Granny (something) is the poster name.

Ask, and it will be answered shortly, if you are interested.

Thanks in advance if you can repeat that thread link!

My home is not defensible against a mob. Most of my neighbors are good people and we’ll help each other. Got one rotten family nearby. I figure there’s strength in numbers on the good side. Neighbors don’t know what we have, except a very good neighbor next door (’Nam vet) probably figures I am well prepared. Guns are good to go but wife needs more practice. Helps that we’re sort of on a cul-de-sac on a hill. So stuff can be taken, but not easily. I like your idea of burying stuff. Even that only works if you survive a mob.
