Unintended consequences? Yeah right! The left is always ahead of us in deception. Now those poor people need more government help, which leads to more government bondage.

Cloward-Piven: make the populace dependent on government for their very lives.

Unfortunately, the people we are talking about, who voted for Barack, are truly stupid and ignorant; but they don't know that they are, and their personality refuses to acknowledge that it could be a serious problem.

And they will, most of them, vote for the Great Uniter, the pathological liar, again, given the opportunity.

This discussion can only go nowhere.

Americans are all entitled to vote. Even the mentally and psychologically deficient.

I rode a bicycle to work for years. The only problem being crazy drivers.

This should be an individual choice. The more folks get out of their vehicles and ride bikes, the safer and healthier we will all be. I saved lots of money not owning a vehicle and could rent one when I needed to haul stuff.

I remember a lot of FReepers making the prediction this would happen. It would put a major hurt on the economy used car business. It was akin to solving hunger by burning food.

That was the plan.

We little people don't have to be riding around. We can take the bus. (except the millions who live in fly-over country where there is little to no public transportation, as far as city buses go.)

My son is an auto mechanic, and I cannot emphasize how depressed he was during cash for clunkers. We live in an area with a lot of poor people, and very high unemployment. He was the “go to” guy to try and find cheap cars for people with little cash, and there was nothing out there.

People would call him crying, begging him to just find something to get them to work, and he couldn’t find anything for them. Obama and his miserable cronies destroyed the cheap car market. It was heartbreaking to see the lots of perfectly good cars that could have gone to people sitting there to be destroyed. What a waste.

That was when a lot of people here in FL realized Obama was a cold b******, with no real love for the poor.

Well they have taken a chunk of cars that were cheap and drivable and serviceable off the road.

However they are still out there. Craigslist personal sales you can find good deals. You can always find something.

This is exactly what the progressives want...everyone riding public transportation, starting with the poor. They're working on making the rest of us poor, and they're well on their way to making that happen.

Totally true. Furthermore, spare parts for repairs are now much more scarce. In my area, those spare parts were often FREE. Now they are nowhere.
Another side effect: people with limited physical mobility are less likely to keep on working if they don’t have their own cars. Some can’t bike or even stand out in the weather waiting for a bus, but they would work if they had their cars. Now they don’t. Now they give up and take unemployment.

There is a constant stream of cars entering the used car market.

The CfC program caused a brief dip in availability and increase in price of used cars, but any effects are long gone by now.

If there is a drop in supply at present, it would be because people are hanging onto their old car instead of buying a new one. Which would be an individual economic decision having nothing to do with a long-past federal program, regardless of how idiotic it was.

Hell I saw an unused grocery cart setting on the side of the road somewhere, it had a hope and change sign on it. Go get it!! But keep you hands off the Amish buggies.

I indulged in the clunker cash program in order to actuall get a little personal benefit for my tax contributions. I remember a bunch of folks at the time wondering what they would do for their next vehicle because all they could afford was used and a cartload of good used vehicles were being deliberately destroyed. I still can't fathom why there was no program to make them available to those who work hard for low wages.

It's like visiting Fresno after a freeze damaged orange crops. There was about a 20% loss, but in order to get government assistance, they had to let the whole crop rot on the trees. The government would rather spend 5 times the money in order to ensure some poor shmuck didn't get away with a few extra bucks. Why not just subsidise the 20% and force them to harvest the good stuff?

I doubt it.

I don’t think there is any shortage of used cars.

Given the need for money to finance a used car dealership, I can see there might be a reduction in dealers.

It's expensive to drive.

I have a sixty something mile commute. I fill my gas tank every 8 days. Last fill up was 12 gallons -- $45 dollars. I drive a Cooper. Insurance is $60 a month. Then there is the cost of the vehicle. Oil changes. Tires. Brakes. Filters. Downtown parking.

My wife's car is not so fortunate. 20 mpg and a fill up costs her $75.

When I rode the bus, it was about $5/day and I drove 20 miles roundtrip to the bus park.

I'm fortunate in that the costs are incidental.

I know what poor is, however. I grew up in it. Poor people do what they must. Owning a car is an expensive luxury.
