Oblivious to science and politics, Carolina wrens and cedar waxwings seem to signal climate change with their wings.
They're among the hints of a subtly shifting N.C. landscape as temperatures inch higher. The tendency is northward and upward: stone fly nymphs moving higher up mountain streams, coastal frogs croaking in Piedmont backyards, tropical fish cruising the temperate coast.
Even scientists convinced of climate change are cautious about blaming these changes of that alone. More often, they say such indicators follow the patterns expected in a warming world.
"It's not just climate change we're facing," said Paul Super, a science coordinator at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where armadillos and South American fire ants have appeared. "It's the pressure of an increased population and increased use of the park, of exotic species being introduced, of atmospheric deposition with metals. All of that is stressing the park in one way or another, and climate change is just another stressor."
Climate models say more volatility lies ahead: warming temperatures, stronger hurricanes, more floods and droughts.
But models can't reveal problems we haven't yet imagined, said ecologist Steve McNulty, a U.S. Forest Service climate researcher based in Raleigh.
Researchers never would have suspected the one-two punch of acid rain and climate change could have triggered such fast, fatal results, McNulty said.
"Interactions that we have not envisioned will likely cause an increasing number of unexpected and unwelcomed surprises in the future," he said. "What makes them so disturbing is that if we're not looking for them, we're going to be least prepared to deal with them when they occur."

Climate change has been going on for 4.7 billion years...Climate change is absolutely natural-take it from someone that makes a living studying CLIMATE CHANGE.
In north Texas we’ve had 2 really cold winters in a row which means not many (or really any) fire ants. I say bring on the change!
Yes, you can see climate change in everything. I’ve come to notice it in the fall with NCAA football ratings and the bowl selections. I’ve come to note climate change in the way that my toilet flushes. I’ve come to note climate change in the way that my watch ticks. I’ve come to note climate change in the way that McDonalds makes its coffee. I’ve come to note climate change in the color of my green grass on the lawn. I’ve come to note climate change in the way that hail falls and smashes my car window. I’ve come to note climate change in the way that the Yankees come to win World Series. I’ve come to note climate change in the way that Katie Couric was dumped for that young Scott-guy. I’ve come to note climate change in the way that Dunkins makes its donuts. I’ve come to note climate change in the way that Hulk Hogan wrestles. I’ve come to note climate in the way that septic tanks fill faster than they did twenty-five years ago.
Yes, maybe I’ve had a bit too much of something. Yes, maybe.
Absolutely— Change is the constant.
But if we make a collective sacrifice we can prevent change! /s
Planting has not begun cause the tractor is buried under a snow drift. Power is off and ... well you get it.
As temperatures increase Warmesters IQs are falling!
These are the same dumbasses that believe in full blown evolution. Don’t you think that even this little change could be the animals adapting to increase their range?
If you ask me...I think way too many folks have science degrees and pretend they know something on science...when they don’t. In the same fashion...we have a whole bunch of folks from the Harvard business school in finance...who pretend to be smart and got jobs in banking...and helped to screw up the US banking system.
Poppycock. The climate is always changing. Throwing money at natural occurences won’t change acts of God. All it will do is steal money from some people to enhance the lives of some of the worlds richest.
We need a report from the park rangers at the Exit Glacier in Alaska.
As you approach the park headquarters there are dated signs. The oldest date is 1896. It is about 2 miles from the toe of the glacier.
The National Park Service has been plotting the retreat of the exit Glacier for more than a hundred years. The GSMP report is trivial propaganda.
Folks were pretty happy with the snake kill in Florida!! If it wasn’t for mother nature, we’d be overtaken. Anyone want buzzards flying over their kids schoolyard??
I just keep wondering what would be the status of research dollars from our (corrupt, venal, and ill-educated) government should the “researcher” find that humans have nothing at all to do with the fact that the climate has been warmer, been colder, and is changing all the time.
Thanks Oldeconomybuyer, and high five on the apropos photo!

it is not this shit of " the ocean is going to rise 50 miles in the next minute crap" that the "environmentalists keep carping on.
There are two things that are true about environmentalists:1. They wish to take us back to the stone age. Why they wish to do that, I do not know, because they would be the first to die because they cannot survive without their air conditioning and the fruits of other people's labor to live off of.2. An "environmentlists" is a tree hugger on steriods. Given positions of power, both are equally dangerous to a free society.
