So far - it's spewed ash 10 miles up - if it doesn't go any higher, we may escape a no-summer summer for a couple years - like after Pinatubo in 1991. Pinatubo ash reached 21-22 miles - blasting it into the stratosphere.
I've forgotten how many miles for the crossover from the troposphere into the stratosphere - ???
HOwever, doesn't the ash from the Chilean volcanoes usually blow south - down the S. American coast?
