Years ago I read in a Ripley’s Believe it or Not, that about 2000 years ago a volcanic eruption in ancient Rome caused thousands of cooked fish to wash up on the shore. The locals ate them and a large number of people died.

Well, I do know that sometimes lakes near volcanos can become saturated (from below) with toxic gasses escaping from underground, related to the volcano.
