The old theory was that the earth warmed up melting the polar ice caps, and all that water was in liquid form. The evaporation caused so much precipitation, including snowfalls, that only about 10 per cent of the snowfalls would melt in the summer because the snowbase was so thick. Over time, the unmelted snow turned into glaciers.
I don’t know if this is any more or less valid than any other theories, like changes in the tilt of the earth’s axis, or a dearth of sunspot activity.
I think there is evidence against is, such as the high temperatures and high sea levels during the hundreds of millions of years of the ages of the dinosaurs.
