I have seen Perry in two debates now, and as a supporter, I have to say he has not shown himself to be an outstanding debater. His delivery is weak, for one thing.

I think he’s, so far, disappointed a lot of supporters and potential supporters. I hope he gets better.

Now exactly how would you walk through a mine field? Perry did fine...he didn't attack those that were just taking up space in the debates that are pretty much finished. He knows how to play this game...being an attacker like several of the others isn't the way you play this silly little lefties debate game. He is not the one leaving the debate looking like Bachmann, Huntsman and Santorum...skrill, desparate losers...those that kinda supporter Bachmann last night...no longer support her...they were ashamed of how she acted. Perry won the debate again.

I agree with you, but very rarily does a campaign turn on a debate. Only if someone makes a huge gaffe (think George H. Bush looking at his watch or Al Gore getting up in George W. Bush's grill) or when Walter Mondale promised in a debate that he would raise people's taxes. Or you have a great debate line such as when Reagan yanked the Microphone away saying I paid for this microphone or when he told Mondale that he wouldn't hold his relative youth or inexperience against him. I don't see Perry making a terrible gaffe and I don't see Obama being such a great debater that he could turn the election during the debate.

Look, the greatest debate line ever delivered is probably when Lloyd Benson told Dan Quayle, I knew Jack Kennedy etc.. and you are no Jack Kennedy. Did it help? No, because his boss (Dukakis) made a major gaffe delivering a professorial answer to the question about how he would treat a criminal who had raped his wife (soft on crime liberal).

Yep some folks are looking for the perfect candidate- one who has never made a mistake and is a hot shot debater to boot. Good luck!

Most on the stage last night do not have a day job and the only job they have is running for president and have been doing so for quite awhile - some for years such as Romney.
As far as I know, Bachman and Perry are the only ones who have anoher job other than being a retired CEO or a professional politician.

A governor for the most part has the most demanding job of all the candidates on the stage. A governor of a huge state of Texas may not be a born debater but he is running on his record or job growth and budgeting in a poor economy.

Perry’s debating skills will sharpen as he gets more experience on the national stage. Also his handlers have given him the points to cover for that night and now everyone who thinks he didn’t say the right things might be surprised when everyone is agreeing with him next week such as what happened this week with the issue of Social Security.
