GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A strong-to-severe geomagnetic storm is in progress following the impact of a coronal mass ejection (CME) at approximately 12:15 UT on Sept. 26th. The Goddard Space Weather Lab reports a "strong compression of Earth's magnetosphere. Simulations indicate that solar wind plasma [has penetrated] close to geosynchronous orbit starting at 13:00UT."
Geosynchronous satellites could therefore be directly exposed to solar wind plasma and magnetic fields. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for Northern and Southern Lights after nightfall. Aurora alerts: text, voice.
aurora photos: from Minoru Yoneto of Queenstown, New Zealand; from Ole Ambrosiussen of Hvinningdal, Silkeborg, Denmark; from Steven Graham of Christchurch, New Zealand; from Mika Puurula of Sotkamo, Finland; from Jonathan Tucker of Whitehorse, Yukon; from Julius Jahre Sætre of Vestfold, Norway
STRONG SOLAR ACTIVITY: Having already unleashed two X-flares since Sept. 22nd, sunspot AR1302 appears ready for more. The active region has a complex "beta-gamma-delta" magnetic field that harbors energy for strong M- and X-class eruptions. Flares from AR1302 will become increasingly geoeffective as the sunspot turns toward Earth in the days ahead.
G 4
Severe...Kp = 8, including a 9-
Power systems: possible widespread voltage control problems and some protective systems will mistakenly trip out key assets from the grid.
Spacecraft operations: may experience surface charging and tracking problems, corrections may be needed for orientation problems.
Other systems: induced pipeline currents affect preventive measures, HF radio propagation sporadic, satellite navigation degraded for hours, low-frequency radio navigation disrupted, and aurora has been seen as low as Alabama and northern California (typically 45° geomagnetic lat.)**.
that's exactly what I feared might happen.
People do seem to be acting dumber than usual, myself included, today. Bump.
This one is going to last awhile....
Sweeden reporting the SKies are totally green....

(It was nice noin’ ya here on the net!! I’ll send you a note via carrier pigeon once everything settles down)
This sounds hugh and series...what can I do to help!
I just feel exceptionally tired, even though I had a good night’s sleep....
The effects of Solar flares?
Must be why I’m tired.
You can buy everyone on freerepublic a generator...
:)
My DirecTV has been getting hit for weeks with daytime signal loss ,, main sats AND the ones carrying international programming ... I’ve had better reception at night despite thunderstorms...
All FReepers should immediately don their plasma-resistant headwear!
Maybe THAT is why the air conditioning in my Ford 3/4-ton pick-up quit working for a while today then started working again.
Bush’s fault...of course.
I dont even know if my insurance covers damage from geomagnets...I know it covers hail but this global warming crap is crazy.
If this affects Monday Night Football, there could be riots.

Thank you. I thought I was going to have to say it.
This sounds hugh and series...what can I do to help!
I am getting outside with a spray nozzle on my water hose and shooting a mist skyward ... it should ward off some of the effect (I think it will anyway) ... gotta help at least some, right ?
