Did scientists and public officials encourage residents of L'Aquila to let their guard down prior to a tragic April 2009 earthquake that killed 309 people in that central Italian city? That is what an Italian court will consider Saturday as it resumes an unprecedented manslaughter trial of six Italian geophysicists and one former government official.
The defendants were part of Italy's National Commission for Forecasting and Predicting Great Risks that held a special meeting in L'Aquila the week before the earthquake to address concerns over recent seismic activity but, according to prosecutors, provided "incomplete, imprecise and contradictory information."
As a result of this information, communicated largely via a press interviews before and after the meeting, many L'Aquila residents felt no need to abandon their homes, prosecutors allege. The magnitude 6.3 earthquake ended up leveling about 20,000 buildings in and around L'Aquila.

If convicted, the defendants are looking at up to 15-year prison terms in addition to a civil suit seeking more than $30 million in damages.

Nuckin’ futs. Wow.
So the scientists should simply issue 2-3 warnings per day from now on so that they can never again be accused of not providing sufficient warning.
This could be written off as some seriously wacky and humorously sad “Euro-Horseshit” if there weren’t 80,000+ “trial lawers” in this country chomping at the bit to bring this kind of lunacy to OUR courts...
Dem peepholes is idiots.
Free the hot girl.
Weren’t there some rumblings from some people in Indonesia who wanted to sue the United States for not warning them on the tsunami in 2004? Seems I remember hearing something about that.
The lawyers and the system is out of control.
Ambulance chasers attacking the high priests of science? Man, if we could just throw college professors into the middle of this fight.
Prosecute Al Gore for masquerading as a scientist.
You've got it backwards...notwithstanding this bizarre case, there's nothing even close to US litigation happiness and mega-$$$-awards in Europe. If anything, there might be some Euro lawyers that hope for THAT lunacy to come to Europe.

Why not round up all the psychics and fortune tellers and indict them for manslaughter as well for failing to predict the earthquake? That makes as much sense, maybe more!
