NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The sponsor of the law that made it legal to carry a gun into bars in Tennessee is facing charges of possession of a handgun while under the influence and drunken driving.
Rep. Curry Todd, a Collierville Republican, was pulled over in Nashville late Tuesday, according to court documents. Police said he failed a roadside sobriety test and refused to take a Breathalyzer test. A loaded .38-caliber gun was found in a holster stuffed between the driver's seat and center console.

I still think it’s a bit much to throw the book at someone on ‘arms charges’ just because they have a few drinks, and just happen to have a weapon in their car. Given the location of the handgun, he could have put that thing in there days ago, and simply forgotten about it(easily done with a little .38). The charges make it look like he was on the way to the firing range while wasted.
Could it be payback for passing the legislation? He didn’t have the gun on him and it very well has/had been in his car for a long period of time. I always leave one in the car...
I totally agree!! I was just saying that it’s POSSIBLE that someone could have one of their firearms in their car without knowing at the time, and to be brought up on ‘arms charges’ as if you were intending to go out shooting while intoxicated could be a bit harsh.
NOT making excuses for the guy. Just sayin’....
It’s interesting that they work his party affiliation into the second sentence. If he had been a Democrat, you might find that information buried in paragraph 7.
With all of these Walking Dead Occuzombies running around, I’d be drunk and armed in public too if I was a Republican politician. I mean, talk about the Night of the Living Dead.
I’m for concealed-carry permits, to allow law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their friends and family.
However, if you wish to live a safe life, you should not drink and drive, whether you have a gun with you or not.
In fact, the safest policy is never to go to a bar; and if you do, do not drink alcohol there. Bars are centers for spontaneous fights. Drink at home, and in strict moderation.
I am a resident of Tennessee with a carry permit. One of the requirements for obtaining a permit is that you can’t have had a DUI within the last 5 years, so that should cover the habitual drunk drivers.
I think I should be able to carry a pistol when eating dinner at a restaurant that serves alcohol, but taking a pistol into a bar is just asking for trouble. As soon as alcohol is consumed, my right to bear arms is compromised... by me. A permit holder that doesn’t have the self control to stay completely straight while in possession of a firearm should not have a carry permit.
Idiot.
You can’t be drinking and have a firearm in TN? So how many deer camps have they raided?
