They were already expecting a cold winter for Europe. That certainly wont help.

The Laki fissure eruption in 1783 may have disrupted European farming so much that it could have helped precipitate the French Revolution. At least if this happens in winter, it won’t destroy crops, and Europe has much better heating systems now.
