First, God’s blessings on all those in that region.
Second;
“The mid-day earthquake was recorded at 7.3 on the Richter scale, according to a Greek news agency, and 6.6 by the Associated Press.”
This will be a fun intellectual exercise to figure out which one is right.

Isn’t 7.3 an unusually strong earthquake for that region??
Perhaps I’m wrong, or caffiene-deprived, but it seems that all, or most, of the ‘devastating’ earthquakes in the northeastern Mediteranean region have been in the 5-6 range....

Every day another earthquake. The quake gods are not happy and are demanding a sacrifice. Perhaps they’d be ok with RATS out of D.C.

Sunday morning.... mid-day earthquake Apparently the international press has abandoned the use of editors, as well. (Other reports indicate early afternoon)

Let’s send the Israeli Navy to help. They’ll only bring paint balls for self-defense, of course.

Why is what happens in the dusty streets of Turkey, *breaking* news in America?
We flipped on the radio this morning, and they immediately led the news hour with news from Turkey, as if this occurred in Nevada, followed by some news from Libya, as if it were in Atlanta. Why is this not 2nd or back page news? Why is all this foreign news being shoved down our throats on a daily basis?
What happens in these far flung foreigner countries is now breaking news in the U.S.A?
Actually, it's every single morning now we get what they call, "Breaking" news from all over the planet shoved down our throats...All this while America circles the drain.
I find this very odd.

The biggest problem with earthquakes in places like Turkey and Iran (both countries with known very active earthquake faults) is that many buildings in both countries were built without consideration for earthquake safety, probably because it would have been too costly to implement the earthquake safety measures found on newer buildings in Taiwan, Japan and in California.
I cite for example the historic city of Bam in southeast Iran, famous for its structures built from an adobe-like material. The 2003 earthquake resulted in a massive collapse of those structures, killing 26,271 people. It could be decades before these structures--now strengthened to withstand earthquakes--are rebuilt.

My Android app shows 34 more earthquakes of 4.0 or more since the 7.0+ yesterday, including at least one more 5.0+ and a 6.0+.
