For those interested in the evolution of Earth, there's a modern update to Darwin's theory in "Darwin's Ghost" by Steve Jones.

Jones' book parallels Darwin's book (in chapter names) and his facts are fascinating; in the four chapters dealing with geography , for instance ...

One spectacular Earth fact is that ...

"... the summit of Everest is formed of rocks made in a shallow sea." (page 252)

Another is ... regarding Earth:

"Five hundred million years ago the air had twenty times as much carbon dioxide as it contains now." (page 231)

I doubt there’s a single piece of rock or speck of dirt that is in the same place it was a billion years ago.

And it won’t be where it is now a billion years down the road.
