More Campaign Spin-Ending the War in Iraq

According to barackobama.com, the end to the Iraq war is 'a promise kept'. It's true that the troops are withdrawing on President Obama's watch. But let's not forget who initiated the withdrawal. (Hint: It's not us.)

Iraq’s prime minister said Saturday that U.S. troops are leaving Iraq after nearly nine years of war because Baghdad rejected American demands that any U.S. military forces to stay would have to be shielded from prosecution or lawsuits.

The comments by Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite, made clear that it was Iraq who refused to let the U.S. military remain under the Americans’ terms.

A day earlier, President Obama hailed the troops’ withdrawal as the result of his commitment — promised shortly after taking office in 2009 — to end the war that he once described as “dumb.”

“When the Americans asked for immunity, the Iraqi side answered that it was not possible,” al-Maliki told reporters in Baghdad. “The discussions over the number of trainers and the place of training stopped. Now that the issue of immunity was decided and that no immunity to be given, the withdrawal has started.”

President Obama promised to bring American troops home the first time around. It didn't happen. Now that we are being told to get out, his re-election campaign is spinning it to look like an active decision.

I saw some of this stupidity on Fox news today. By this logic when the last US military personnel leaves Germany and Japan, I guess WWII will be over.

This is of course Dim logic to try to credit Obama for ending a war that ended a good while ago. And as usual people and institutions who claim not to be lefitist are adopting this foolishness.

I don’t believe for a moment that we left because the Iraqi politicians made us leave. It is a convenient reason for NObama to get us out and say he fulfilled a campaign promise. On the other hand, if we are not going to fight a war to win than the military has no reason to be there. Let the politicians and diplomats screw it up by themselves.

Candidate obama said the troops would be out in 16 months. It took three years

Our U.S. troops are leaving Iraq because Obama FAILED to do his job. He has caused us to leave with our tail between our legs.

'sok. As a liberal he can't foresee that abandoning Iraq is going to blow up BIG TIME, probably right before our presidential election.

This will make it very, very difficult for the republicans to throw the election again this time...

As far as Obama and his ilk are concerned, that is not a failure, it is a major success.

oh, I completely agree that the whole thing will blow up, and probably right before the election. it’s amazing that the obamites’ craven political calculations aren’t causing him to kick this decision past the election like all of the other controversial decisions that he has postponed.

ultimately, what we got was the result if he had done nothing, which is his wont these days. the country has been on cruise control since he hijacked our health care.

Since he pulled out without accomplishing anything long term, why didn’t he just do it when he took office?

Oh, that’s right, re-election.

“But let’s not forget who initiated the withdrawal.”

Yeah. Dumb dumb Dubya. Its actually entertaining watching the bots tie themselves into knots regarding the withdrawl from Iraq. Obama bad...but Prince Dubya started it...uhh oh wait we need to occupy that country forever...but didn’t Georgie talk about Iraqi freedom....wait uh let’s just steal their oil and kill everyone...uh...wait the American and Iraqi people want us to leave...

The only ones who are 'tied in knots' are the few crackpots who hate George W. Bush so much that they can't see the forest for the trees.......the ones who ignore the facts, ignore history, ignore everything but their own bile.

I feel sorry for every one of you. There aren't many of you, but you deserve complete pity from those of us who have a grip on reality.

Sad creatures......every last one of you.

CONGRATULATIONS to our troops who completed the VICTORY in Iraq. SHAME on Barack Obama for claiming credit for the Bush/Petraeus/Military victory!

And we’re leaving our equipment behind as we can’t afford to ship its home. So were really equipping our enemies to kill even more of our warriors later on. At the least the equipment should have been left to the Kurds.

I've heard Nexium is good for acid reflux.

Judging from your ridiculous comments above, it's the least you need, KB. You are one mixed up and angry fellow.

Peace to you at this blessed time of year. Of all the malcontents on FR, you perhaps need it most.

Oh.....and God BLESS President Bush, General Petraeus and our troops for keeping us safe from harm and killing a lot of really bad guys.
