Where Did the Voters Go? Nowhere.
commentary magazine ^ | 11-8-12 | Jon Podhoretz

Posted on 11/08/2012 7:25:35 PM PST by cdchik123

As the national vote total began to solidify last night, one question on the minds of Republicans was: Where are the missing voters? Last night it looked like Mitt Romney had received something like 10 to 15 percent fewer votes than John McCain had in 2008, even though his percentage of the overall vote was at least two points higher. What did this mean? Where did the voters go? They didn’t go to Barack Obama, because exit polls suggested he had basically turned out the same demographic support he had four years ago. So where are they? Did this suggest a significant element of the GOP base had stayed home? Perhaps evangelical voters quietly refusing to cast a ballot for a Mormon? Populist voters disgusted by the 47 percent tape?

As I write, Mitt Romney has 57.4 million votes. John McCain ended up with 59.9 million. It’s a little noticed fact that in two weeks following every presidential election, votes continue to be reported…by the millions. As I recall, Barack Obama got something like four million more votes in the weeks after election day, while John McCain got two or three million. It’s likely that by Thanksgiving, the final vote tally will show Romney very close to or even slightly exceeding McCain’s total.

So there are probably no missing voters. The idea offers a certain degree of cold comfort for conservatives and Republicans, because it would suggest the problem was with Romney’s candidacy in particular and not with the movement or the party. But it’s false, and they will not be spared the reckoning about the party’s future.

Some people find it increasingly comfortable to live on their knees.

There is a simple explanation— those independents he won, were Republicans in previous election cycles. They just became disillusioned Republicans for various reasons, and stopped wanting to be called Republicans— even here at FR, that sentiment exists strongly (vote conservative, not Republican).

BTW - I now have to live with the shame that I caved my principle at the last minute and voted for Romney. I am ashamed I did so.

Don't be ashamed as it was an act of absolute desperation. Many conservatives and good Americans did the same thing.

"On the Thursday after the 2008 election, just over 121 million votes had been counted, giving Obama a 6-point lead over Sen. John McCain (52.3 percent to 46.3 percent). But those totals did not include nearly 10 million additional votes that were later included in the official certified count, boosting Obama's margin over McCain to 7.4 points (52.9 percent to 45.5 percent)." --huffingtonpost.com story on pollsters

Great points. Rick Santorum is Catholic. Newt Gingrich, I believe, is a converted Catholic. If either of them was the nominee would the evangelicals have stayed home too? We just gave the worst president in American history another four years to wreak havoc on the country and no doubt some evangelical out there is saying to himself, “at least we don’t have a Mormon in there”.

"This is an old issue that was suppressed for the sake of FREEPER comity during the body of the formal campaign ~ lest I somehow hurt Romney more than several other disasters had already done."

Actually the reference to your posts was "comedy", not comity, but whatever...

And for the rest of your post, nothing special -- I actually put numbers to it in July, and I've got Obama within .5%

"I do believe the total popular vote is going to contract this year 2-3%. Some Obama voters are not going to vote this year. Some McCain voters are not going to vote this year. But more importantly, some voters who did not vote in '08 are going to vote for Mittens, and yes, some Obama voters are going to outright vote Mittens. And obviously there are a couple of Freepers switching from McCain to vote Obama this time around, but whatever...

2012 (projected from ABC poll):
R [R] 65,268,000
O [D] 60,732,000
Total: 126,000,000

2012 current (FL still counting):
O [D] 61,170,405
R [R] 58,163,977

If that is the case, then we are so vastly outnumbered that the Democrats can have millions show up, and still win. I don’t see that being the case in states like Ohio, Virginia, and Florida. All three have Republican governors, and Republican-heavy congressional delegations. You are correct to point out the people on here who now refuse to identify as “Republican”; there are also a lot who said they would never vote for Mitt Romney under and circumstances, and it looks like they didn’t.

3 million old white guys collectively shot themselves and the rest of us in the foot. The republic is truly lost.

You are right. There are already more Romney votes counted for the swing states Virginia and Florida than there were in the final tally for McCain in those states. In Ohio there are so far about 100,000 fewer votes counted for Romney than there were for McCain, whereas Obama has so far 250,000 fewer votes counted.

I noticed however that there are so far about a million fewer votes counted for the Republicans 2012 vs 2008 in the Sandy states of NY, NJ, and CT, where it doesn't matter (1.5 million fewer for Obama than in 2008).

If there are protest voters who stayed home rather than vote for Romney, they very well could be in the Solid Red States where there was no danger of Obama winning.

So the Rush thesis looks like a Red Herring. When Tea Party favorites like Murdoch and Akin lose eminently winnable seats, for speaking on social issues that posters here regularly advocate, we have to question whether we want candidates who speak on those issues rather than emphasize the economic and the proper role of government.

And if Mitt and Mr. Weepy/McConnell had won, they’d be bending over to be ‘more inclusive’ and you’d still be bitching.

At least those that realized a turd in the punchbowl, regardless if it has (R) or not, isn’t something one should be drinking from.

No, it was also conservative evangelicals that wouldn’t support a cult devotee that would use the Oval Office to preach Mormonisn.

Where do people get this from? Did he do that as MA governor?

Freepers switching to Obama is just something creeping out of your nightmares.

Now, for the hard questions. Why were your numbers any good? Did you account for mortality, disability, population growth?

I gave numbers to my predictions as well ~ and Obama lived down to every expectation. So did Romney.

I also tied the numbers drift to a theory of how to win elections ~ the one used by LBJ, Reagan, Nixon, Bush ~

You had members of the media who had no problem at all with instances of actual rape by Bill Clinton standing there, right arms outstretched, fingers pointing ~ and hissing 'HE SAID RAPE, HE SAID RAPE' ~ so much for the 'newsies'.

They will be out of business soon, and most of them will need to commit seppuku since they have no marketable skills ~ even casual gay sex isn't for sale anymore.

Between "W" and today we should have had 5 million dead white guys who formerly voted Republican. That we were down just 3 million means, in reality, we were UP.

Alas, it's not enough to be UP when your candidate wants to campaign to non-existent demographic entities, and promises to reach around to Democrats once he gets there.

That BS that the republican establishment tried to use during the primaries to support Romney is still every bit as much BS now as it was then.

” The Republicans better forget getting the evangelical Christian Catholic vote. Cannot vote for a Baptist - too strict, Cannot vote for a Catholic - don’t agree with their teaching, Cannot vote for a Mormon - they are a cult, Cannot vote for mainline Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian candidate - too liberal in their thinking, will vote for a Muslim because the liberal news media say that is acceptable. “

a number of Freepers here felt more comfortable during the election campaign denigrating Romney than attacking Obama. their fear and hatred of mormonism is so great that they would rather have a Muslim-hiding-in-plain sight as their president. i guess they believe that should Romney have been elected that he would have made mormonism the state religion, much as Romney did when he was governor of Massachusetts [sarc] forcing everyone to don their magic underwear.

Romney was so fearful, i believe, in antagonizing the independent voter because of BO’s and the MSM’s portrait of him as an extremist: rich, and white, and a hater of women and the middle class, that he failed to forcefully challenge BO in the debates and on the campaign trail.

i believe that Newt Gingrich would have never allowed this to happen, but i do not regret that i voted for Romney over BO.

i think we live in a new America where those who are takers of the federal dole now exceed the 47 percent Romney was accused of writing off.

You're like a leaking tire. Where are your numbers? Not some amorphous this and that. Put your pre-election projected models out here and sign off on them -- or shut it. I don't recall you doing a damn thing but comedic, er, comity fishwife bitching, but who knows, maybe you found a truffle....

And thanks for the 40-year-old advice on how to win elections and friends, Carnegie.
